My turn to be nasty... ;)
It always amazes me people taking chances with HT tires in such conditions. If its an unexpected situation OK, but I personally would not take a chance without AT or MT tires knowing where I am going :geek:

Which is why I fitted Scorpion ATRs. Very impressed with them. Others driving on Dueler H/Ts also did very well. Most of Moremi is sand anyway and you do not need anything special, as long as it has strong sidewalls to cope with all the sharp roots.

 Can I get out of this one if I'm referring to your spare? That looks like a HT

The spares are Cooper Discoverer ATR ;-)

I do not like the really chunky treads as I do not do a lot of mud (mostly Kgalagadi and Namibia) and find them a bit hard and noisy. Also the very popular BFG AT is a bit slippery in the Cape rain. They look very cool though.

The new Scorpions look like HT tyres but are rated AT. I spent over an hour talking to the Pirelli technical rep about this. He explained why the new tyres look different to the previous, more chunky, model. The reason is that the modern high-end 4x4's are very powerful and are capable of well over 160-180 kph on the road and the tyres need to cope with this as well as having good grip off-road. Therefore the Scorpions use special ribs and compounds to give sidewall strength and ride comfort. I will buy them again like a shot. They are perfect over rocks and sand.

I notice your roofrack is mounted directly onto the standard roofrails. Obviously this works well for you or have you had any trouble with this arangement before?

This was my first trip with the Frontrunner. When I filled the jerry cans, the rails started to squeak a bit. Especially when bouncing around Moremi and Savuti. I am thinking of having the rails removed and having rack mounted directly.

At first I was a bit hesitant as it would mean that they must remove the roof lining and drill holes, making the rails non-refittable.

Naah, I'll stop now. Shovel is blunt

Honestly did not believe them tires to have a AT rating. Interesting though ;)
