They don't really compete for the same market.
The Disco competes with the likes of
Tyre for off-road are scarce and expensive (ask, I drive a Touareg).
I like the Disco4, but then in the V6 TD engine only. That LR V8 drinks worse than a student at "Jool".
On the Pajero, reliability is just about the norm, LR is still battling to establish the reliability, although by all accounts the Disco4 is reliable.
The Disco competes with the likes of
- Merc ML/GL
- VW Touareg
- BMW X5 (although the X5 does not have low range transfer)
- Audi Q5/Q7

The Disco 4 is a hi-tech car. I would not like to be stuck in Botswana with one on a breakdown.
They are wonderful cars, can take a good load, have good off-road specs. They have great tyres for tar roads, but crappy for off-road. Big rims (19"?) to fit over the massive calipers needed to stop this monster!
I think they have recovered from the blues of the poor Disco 2, and it should give you reliable performance.
Personally, I'd prefer the D3 due to the smaller rims, but the D4 has a much improved (but even higher-tech) engine.
I recon it is a situation of "horses for courses" - On tar, I'd prefer the Disco. Overland both will be great, but the Disco will be a disaster if broken down, and off-road I'd prefer the Pajero.
All-in-all I would keep the Pajero, but them I am a self-declared Pajeroholic!

That Disco is oh so seductive, as all Landies are. I often park next to a Landy (any Landy) and say to myself, "Damn, I'd like one". Then of course reality sets in and I know I would NEVER trust one like I do all my Pajeros to date.
That's the same thing troubling me,reliability.
I have faith in the Paj,not so sure about the Disco's track record. This new shape is really looking nifty,and I'm more on the black top than off it.
PS :I think I'm just scratching where it doesn't itch
PPS:just did some searching and have realised that i won't replace the reliability of the Pajero.

When I was looking at SUV's the only two considerations were really Pajero and Disco (V8 D2 at the time)
Personally I don't think any others come close in their market segment.
