Re: What tyres to buy
Another Good brand that you can look at is Cooper Discoverer, their new tyres are really good.

I have STT's (M&S) they travel well on Tar, and absolutely excellent in sand and mud, even great on rock.
I also find them a helluva lot quieter than the previous generation Discoverers.
They use a new rubber polymer on the treads (which wrap around & down the shoulders about 30%) that prevents cutting
from sharp rocks, and I think its because of this that they are so much quieter.
Also, the fact that the tread wraps down the shoulder as mentioned, when deflated your still running on tread, and not sidewall. They also have new bigger beads to stop de-rimming when driving de-flated.
Lastly, they are about 10-12% cheaper off the shelf than BFGs.

As mentioned, I have the STT's, but you should also look at the A/Ts.

We all like they tyres we have bought, that is a given (usually) and will promote that brand, so look at all of them,
this is just my perspective on these Cooper Discoverers (keeping in mind, as we should know, Kingsley Holgate's choice of Tyre is the Discoverer A/Ts

Cheers,
And Good luck with your Hunt / Research.
I'm sure you'll now make a truly informed decision.

Re: What tyres to buy
Thanks for the info.

I have done a lot of research on the back of the advice I received. Heard good things about Hankook. Heard good things about most tyres.

It is now finding the right deal on either Hankook, General AT2 or Yokohama Geolanders. The Geolanders ratings are excellent. In fact on some forums better than BFG and Cooper. But they are close on its heels. The General and the Hankook on their heels and pretty much the same. All depends on the forum.

Best price I can get for BFG is R2,600, but stopped looking. The Geolanders on special for R1,700. mmmm.....

Most people have their preferred brand, I listen to people who have tried a couple and speak from experience not only opinion. Thanks for the help, it is pushing me in the right direction.

Re: What tyres to buy
Hi all,

I'm also in the market for new tyres and the BFG's can be had for roughly R1950 per tyre which I think is quite good. Then I can get the Michelin LTX M/S for approx R1820 each and I have heard very good things about them. Long life, good grip, quiet, etc. Obviously they won't be as good as the BFG AT offroad but other than that does anyone have any views or opinions on them.

The reason I am even considering anything other than the BFG's (which I currently have) is that they have contributed to quite a hard and somewhat noisy ride. Other than that they have been perfect.
Am I scratching where there is no itch? :?

Thanks
Bruce
Re: What tyres to buy
I have Geolander AT-S tyres on the Paj (GO-12 is the tyre code) and I have been very, very satisfied with them. They are quiet, have good wet road grip, and have given me 105000 km of great service with regular cross rotation (every 15000km or so). They surprised me with their performance off the black stuff as well (in sand, on rocks and so on). I can only compare directly with the more road based Geolander GO-39 tyres that the car had on as original equipment and the AT-S tyres comfortably eclipse them by performing just as well on the road (as far as I can tell) and beating them by a country mile in the rough.

I really need to replace the Geolandars now, and would fit another set of AT-S tyres without hesitation, if I can get them at a price that I can afford.

That sounds like a deal! Just a couple of questions:
* Is this on the AT-S?
* What size tires are these?
* Who has this special?

Re: What tyres to buy
Evening folks,

After reading such positive reports on the Hankooks today I shopped around a bit. It seems that only TW&T sell them and it also seems as if they have priced them as a premium product to the extent that they are the same price other so called premium brands such as BFG. The best price they could offer me on the Hankooks was R2200 each. Methinks the TW&T chaps are being greedy :(

Pity, they are widely recommended, but at that price you can have a set of BFG's and some change...

Re: What tyres to buy
So I settled on BFG AT's again and had them fitted today since it was quiet at work! :D :D :D
I went for the slightly oversized 265/75R16's and I know I have advocated staying with the std size tyres so before I get shot down in flames let me justify this decision...

- I have recently done some research and have concluded that the only issue with the slightly larger tyres is marginally higher fuel consumption. Some people don't even notice a difference since it is usage dependent I imagine.
- The 265/75R16 is easier to source, cheaper (by about R300 per tyre) and offers a little more ground clearance.
- And the most important reason of all is that since the 60mm suspension lift the old tyres just didn't fill the wheel arches properly!

So I hope that is a decision I won't regret. I'll let you know if I do.

Cheers

Re: What tyres to buy
Tyre choice is a nightmare for me. i used Continental contitrack,Deuler AT's amd Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on previous cars.

Now I am clueless what to get.

can you guys please add to this list (price as well) for a list of tyre choices.
Lets say 265 65 17.I got a few prices, below.
Is it fair to say that 80 000km is expected from almost all these brands just as a measurement.

Maxxis Bighorn?
Coopers?
Yokohama Geolanders?
Pirelli Scorpions : R 1990
Hankook?
BF Goodridge: R2990
Bridgestone Deulers : R2200
Mickey Thompson: R 2500
Grabbers

Any other tyres I didnt put on the list...please add.
