Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem may be???
Hi, I have a 3.2 Did GLS LWB with 160,000 on the clock. I have recently noticed a strange noise when the engine is loaded. It is especially noticale when towing my trailer. At first I thought my exhaust was blowing or the manifold was leaking. After checking all of these items and having my injectors cleaned I still have the problem. It sounds like the manifold/exhaust is blowing and when loadin gthe engine it can be best described as enging ping (if only it were a petrol engine).
Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem may be???

Hi my 3.2 DID did exactly the same
After Calibrating the dieselpump it was still there
After servicing the injectors it was still the same.
When driving without towing the caravan nothing was heard even on uphills.
Only when going up steep hills with the caravan in tow it starts to "ping" and if you throttle down the pinging stops.
In shear dsperation i had the turbo removed and it was found to be the turbo fan wiping against the casing under large torque. (It wiped off 2 mm of the turbo fan which was clearly visable. Fortunately the casing was still ok)
After replacing the turbo fan and shaft, fitted with new bushes, the problem is now all of the past.
So please have the turbo checked as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Greetings Mike

This raises a question: What is a typical lifespan of the turbo on the 3.2 DID?
I would say that at 160,000 km, this was a case of an early failure. I expect it to last a little longer.

Thanks Guys, I was starting to believe that I was nuts about this noise that keeps haunting me. I had resigned myself to waiting for something to break before I would have some indication of the problem.
Who did you get to do the turbo work? Is this something that the agents must do (who knows what the price woudl be!) or do you know of someone else that can asist?

hdsmit, have you managed to get yours sorted? I haven't had the noise for a long time now, but it suddenly re-appeared over the long weekend!

Hi
Does this sound like the same thing?

Someone suggested it could be the torque converter needing oil, but turbo does sound more likely. How does one get this checked?
