Forums confuse me........ (tyre choices)
I thought joining a forum would help me, but in this case I'm more confused than ever....

I need to replace my tyres and the options are unreal...

I want to fit AT's as my Jerry does more tar than gravel/offroad. I've managed to bring the choices down to either BF's or Coopers. What concerns me is that both tyres get good ratings from their owners, although many complain about the BF's wet road handling (are they really that bad?), and it seems as if they are only availible 265/75/16. I've just read the thread about running 75's vs 70's and the converter on DiD's auto box which is another concern (I dont want to hurt my baby...)

Should I then rather go for the Coopers or am I being paranoid aboud the BF's????

Please help, SWAMBO is getting irritated whith me............

What's wrong with Hankook AT-M?

Seriously, either BF or Coopers are a good bet. It's the BF muds that you need to worry about on wet asphalt.

Re: Forums confuse me........
Hi Nodger,

Regarding the size issue - BFG's do come in 265/70R16 - that's what I have on my Pajero GLX. The auto box has very long gearing and as such is sensitive to tyre sizes. You are wise to stay with the standard size.

As far as wet road handling is concerned, I have done 75000km on my BFG's so far and not once have I had a concern that they were not gripping adequately. Having said that I do not race when the roads are wet.

The only negatives aspects I can offer about the BFG's (and this is probably common to all AT type tyres) is that they are slightly noisier than the old Geolandars GO39's and they also pushed the fuel consumption up a little - not a lot, but noticeable.

Sorry I cannot comment on the Coopers but I can definitely recommend the BFG's.

Go for it!

Re: Forums confuse me........
Hi Nodger

I've got both BFG's KM2 Mudz & Cooper STT mudz. I'm very satisfied with both (tried & tested). Only thing is, I haven't experienced a wet season yet with them.....so....can only comment on wet weather handling later. I too, don't drive like "Schummaker", but have been on rock, mud and sand, with both brands = very happy results. :P One might be "slightly noisier than the other, but no biggie.....

The question I put to you is, try for the best tyre available....FOR YOUR BUDGET....don't cut corners....just shop around ( like most of us do), and find the right specialist who will give you a R300-R500 cheaper price (per tyre !!), for the top brands (ending in the same / similar pricing as the cheaper, less popular brands (but which can also suit you / your 4x4, just as well).

By the way.....a bit of bad news.....tyre prices just jumped up, on the 1st March
Negativety and Non-enthiusiasm are the only obstacles we shouldn't encounter "

I had BFG on my van, and now have Hankook. While the jury is out on their longevity compared to the others, I am very happy with their performance both on road and offroad. As 4ePajero likes to say, having experience is not subject to debate  and as such I can say the Hankooks have way better wet weather performance than the BFG's, and have better manners in general.

Also consider GY Wrangler, Bridgestone Duellers and Khumo

I am of the opinion, that if you stick AT tyres from the brands mentioned in this thread, you are fine looking for the cheapest tyre, but I assure you it wont be BFG or Coopers because they are generally overpriced for what you get.

I have experience of two of the popular brands:

BFG AT:
I had a set on the Gen1 Pajero, which I sold with 110 000kms on them. How many kms the buyer put on them, I don't know.
I just bought a set for the Touareg, and they served me well on their inaugeral trip into the southern Drakensberg area.

Bridgestone Duellers 694:
Currently on the Pajero.
Quieter and softer than the BFGs, but are wearing unevenly, and my guess is that they won't last as long as the BFGs, but time will tell.

I considered Hankooks for the Touareg, but could not find the size I wanted in SA. They get very good reports, and is most probably the best value for money.

I have heard pros for most tyres, but the only recurring con for the BFG ATs is the wet asphalt grip (which I have not experienced, most probably because I drive 'carefully' on wet asphalt, and like a hooligan on wet gravel! ).

PS I know very little about Coopers except that they look "rugged".
Reviews vary from (fanatically) positive to negative (the minority).
They can't be bad if they sell so well, I suppose.

Thanx for the replies.

This morning I went ahead and fitted BFG AT's.
Will post my views as time goes by.

I find myself surfing the Forum looking for opinions on tyres because, well, it's that time again.
Somethings gone wrong since you guys bought Hankooks because today TWT quoted me R2600 each for 265 * 70 * 16 Hankook tyres. Contacted TWT, Super Tyres and Hi-Q, this is the best I can find :

Pirelli Scorpion A/T R2250.00 incl.
Yokohama G012 R1950.00 incl.
Bridgestone Dueler A/T R2430.00 incl.
Good Year AT/SA R1730.00 incl.
BF Goodrich AT R2650.00 incl.
Kumho R1880.00 incl
Hankook R 2600.00 incl.

This is going to hurt !!

Re: Forums confuse me........ (tyre choices)
kumho seems to be getting good reviews but are more puncture prone due to thinner sidewalls than the BFGs.

If you can afford it, get hankooks or BFGs. They are overpriced but it is a good tyre.

Dean. In that list I would have no problem buying Kumho or the GY tyres. The 'kooks have skyrocketed due to demand most likely
