BFG Mud Terrain vibration on Gen2
Does anyone else use BFG Mud Terrains? (31x10.5)
I am interested to know if you also have a constant vibration through the steering wheel, as if your balancing is out.
mine occurs between 80 and 100kph

The tyres have been balanced, rotated on rims numerous times by TWT, tyre pressures tested from 2.5b down to 1.9b (lower pressure makes a slight improvement).
I then took it to the main steelers for a complete suspension/steering check and had all worn parts replaced.

The Michelin rep eventually took the car for a drive and said its 'Normal'.

any input / experience greatly appreciated as I need to decide if its something I live with (2nd vehicle so not an issue) or if I need to push TWT/Michelin with the problem.

did you buy them second hand or did you buy a car that had them on but stood for a long while.

If tyres are left on a car and it stands for extended periods of time the tyre can go out of round and even though they are balanced they will create vibration at certain speeds.

Hi Marius,

Nope, brand new out the box so to speak from TWT. So after parting with loads of dosh I'm keen to get it sorted. but have no idea if this is a 'normal' experience with BFG Muds.

if you got them brand new from TWT then make it their problem - take the suspension reports/slips with you.

Hi Nick

I've also purchased BFG KM2's from new.....No problems to date....methinks you have possibly 1x faulty / off balance, from manufacture, that cannot be balanced by machine correct...??

I fully agree with 4e, to go back to TWT and DEMAND the problem be sorted out by them..... as you said..... lotsa dosh... !!

Thanx Achille,

Brent the manager at Canal walk branch has been great and very helpful. But I will email him again especially now you say you have no such issues with same tyres.

Excluding road noise, would you say your tyres are performing like any other you've had in terms of smoothness and vibration etc etc?

Re: BFG Mud Terrain vibration on Gen2
Nick,
My suggestion is to get the rep. again and demand the tyres tested at the tyre test centre in JHB. I know it is close to Ceasers and my vehicle has been done there after I had sinilar problems with my new vehicle and General Grabbers.
Eventually the faulty tires got replaced. Problem was out of round - factory fault.
Or try high speed balancing which will show out of round or flat spots quite quickly.
Good Luck

Hi Nick

So far, the BFG KM2's have performed quite well...though I have not pushed them (and probably will do my best not to) in wet weather, or higher constant speeds in excess of 120kph.
They have been really super in sand and rocky conditions, with never a hesitation, and i'm very happy with the rubber compound hardness ( and resistance to wear & tear)......
I also have Cooper STT muds, on another Pajero, which I have had the opportunity to try out in a more extreme outing or two, ..... and I find the two brands reasonably similar. Both are of the 31x10.5x15 spec, and as such, have the stiffer, reinforced sidewalls, making for a slightly harder ride..... with again... no problem, when driving the normal speed limits on tar.
As someone else mentioned, tyre pressure plays a HUGE part ( on tar, on gravel and on sand), as to how your 4x4 handles... and I'm presently doing constant trials and adjustments.....

I hope this has been of some value Nick... enjoy the tyres, after having the faulty one/s replaced.... :D

Re: BFG Mud Terrain vibration on Gen2
Thanx Achille,

where in the WC are you? I'd be interested for you to drive my Pajero and see how much different the two rides are on the same tyre type on the same vehicle. I can then really go back to TWT with a comparison ride

Hi Nick

I'm living in the CBD / City Bowl area, of CT... Just give me a PM, and I'll forward you my contact number... I can also refer you to a very knowledgeable tyre fundi, in Stikland, from whom I bought my last 6x Mud tyres from, ... and who is called upon, from time to time, to share his advice & wisdom, on one or more national 4x4 magazines / forums..... ??
