Flashing Lights on Dash-Help Please 99' 3500 Auto Blister
Hi All,

Apologies if this was discussed in another topic but I am in a fix here with little time to react.

This morning I drove to work and upon my last 2 turns before parking I noticed the Auto light on the dash was flashing, then just before I parked the Orange Engine light also lit up this was after a 30 min drive in traffic to town.

I imeadiatley stopped and left the car for about 2 hours then went back down to check. I started the vehicle and took it around the block and no lights lit up.

I am worried that when I drive in traffic that something funny is going to happen again ! You know Murphy !

One other thing I must mention is that I did some offroading in the sand on Saturday... so was wondering if all the bashing around mucked up the electronics.

would really appreciate some advice please

A Pajero workshop should be able to plug in their box of tricks and tell you what is wrong.

My first thought is that the autobox ran a little hot in the traffic. If I were in your shoes, I'd stick the box in N when stationary on the way home today. That should help control heat build-up in the traffic.

At home this evening, check all your oil and fluid levels and condition. Check your radiator condition as well, make sure the cooling fins are not clogged with sand or some other gunk.

Did your Paj labour in the thick sand?
Did you use low range or allowed the box to drive through the torque converter in high range?
When was the last time the autobox oil was replaced? If that warning was the box temp, then replacing the box oil in anycase won't be a bad idea.

Good luck,

Roelf... thanx a mil

to answer your questions..

Did your Paj labour in the thick sand? No labour throughout the day she did very well.
Did you use low range or allowed the box to drive through the torque converter in high range? only used High Range.. not sure what you mean by drive through the torque converter ? :?
When was the last time the autobox oil was replaced? Service was done in July ... but will check the levels before I go home later

Thanx for the advice.. I will take it easy in the traffic and get to a Pajero Specialist ASAP.

"drive through the torque converter"... Sorry, this is far from a clear statement :?

Basically sometimes when you almost stop, but not quite and start driving again, the box doesn't shift to 1st. It will stay in 3rd and "slip" through the torque converter. In other words your wheel speed is slower than one would have expected for that gear and engine revs. That is a good generator of heat.

If you scratch around on this forum you will find wonderful posts that explain everything, including the effect a over heated box can have on the oil. Maybe a touch of over heating in the sand and then traffic was just enough to give warning signs.

I experienced that once going up Akadis Pass in auto mode with a DiD LWB. I was in low range and crawling up with the trailer in tow. I started "sensing" heat coming from under the car and realised the box was in 3rd. I immediately swapped to tip-tronic and geared down to 1st. Soon all was well again. I think if my window was closed, I would not have felt the heat and eventually the box would have gone into "warning light" mode.

I understand what you mean... with the my older box I slapped it into 2nd for most of the day. I am very impressed with her gear changes and kick down is so responsive. Was on the dunes with a Disco 3 V8se Auto. The disco did too much with the gear changes and suspension adjustments... Guess my mate has to go for training....

I'm hoping to get an appointment with AnG to have her plugged in this week still. I checked transmission oil which was ok, before driving home (no traffic) quite fine no warning lights...... Today again just before hitting town the lights came on. Sounds like traffic has something to do with it...

Will post results once checked out.

So since my last post I had the vehicle to ANG Service Centre, they plugged in computer and the results were pointing to a Sensor, which was replaced.

I continued driving to work and after a few days the light came back on again.

There is no difference in performance, no sounds nothing....so until such time I can get it to the Gearbox Specialist, I have been driving her for over 2 months now and noticed that the lights only comes on when I brake... and no pattern as to when it comes on.... sometimes it doesnt flash for days... then when you least expect it.. the disco starts.

I'll take it in for a check-up after the festive season and will avoid any serious offroading until such time.

For now its still a Mystery to me.

drive it in 4H for the next few days/weeks.

If the lights stay on and you don't get any further flashing, then chances are you have a vacuum leak or a vacuum solenoid is failing/has failed.

So i must admit i was a bit Chicken to do the 4H driving on the tar road, so instead I reduced the amount of driving in Overdrive. I was using the overdrive permanently and since only using it for speeds over 80km/h, for the past month no lights the disco has dissapeared completely.... will still need to have it checked out though... Thanx to all for the input.

don't be scared to use 4H on tar. It is the joy of super select. 4H can be used on tar. Just do NOT use 4HLc.

I sometimes drive weeks at a time in 4H.
