I get a bit more KM on the 500, but most ppl say that 50 is better of the engine.
Re: Diesel 500 or .05
I find this an interesting question and cannot find too many comments on a site search. It would make sense to use the 500ppm as it is cheaper, however is it really true that it does not burn as cleanly and can accelerate engine and injector wear ? I have just returned from a trip to Clarens from Durban and used 50ppm on the way there and 500ppm on the return trip. A quick calculation shows that my consumption improved at least 10% with the 500ppm, however I will try to confirm this over time by changing grades for extended periods and comparing figures. I am a little concerned about the negative comment on the 500ppm though.

Re: Diesel 500 or .05
The following is not fact - just my feeling

The new low sulphur diesel is made to comply with legislation. The older diesel was made to perform!

I think both are equally dirty (dirt and contaminant wise) but the higher the sulphur content the faster the engine oil will acidify - hence the short oil change intervals when diesel was still approx 5000ppm a decade ago. Some european diesels have 20'000km oil change intervals as long as you use their 0.5ppm or 1ppm diesel.

The process of removing the sulphur also removes the lubricity (sulphur is not the lubricant - it is just a toxin to the environment when burned) and so the refineries add additives to bring the lubricity up to legislation standards.

I think the more diesel gets refined the less margin for error will exist in terms of technical specifications on the lubricity and combustion properties. It does however save the environment as it is an extremely clean combustion process if all is functioning as it should - which is difficult in the RSA as we lack the precision logistics as shown by the zany Germans! :)

With the older diesel fuel we filled up and go with a puff of smoke and change the oil every 5000km. Injector or pump failures were unheard of back then. So what's more damaging. Keeping old technology going for 2/3 decades or buying a new manufactured car every 5 years?

I wonder what's the calculation : how long do you have to drive a new eco box to make up for the eco damage of producing it, compared to keeping the older car with higher emissions?

Makes good sense ! :)
Re: Diesel 500 or .05
i had a look at my fuel up stats and have switch between 50ppm and 500ppm depending on availability at the pump i fill up.

I have shown and better consumption the last 15 or so fuel ups alternating between 50 and 500 and i have used the odd 200ml of 2SO per fill up. +-9.5 to 10.5k/l

only on 500 and a bad driving style i avg +-8.5 to 9km/l

Do i get better millage due to switching between 50 and 500.... i dont know but it looks like it.

Do i get better millage due to changing my driving style... Most definitely.
