Manual or Auto
I don't know Pajero's very well, so please help with advice.

My brother inlaw is looking at buying an old Pajero.
Currently he can get a '98 Manual with 280,000km on the clock and a '99 Auto with 188,000km on the clock.

Our concern is the Auto. Is the Auto much more heavy on fuel than the manual and how reliable are these auto boxes?

He wants to go for the Petrol version.

Any comments which will help him decide is welcome and if you know of a good condition Pajero in the Cape Town area, please let me know so I can send him the details.

Re: Manual or Auto
there are pros and cons with both on the gen2

Auto
- more relaxed drive and makes offroad easier
- slightly worse consumption
- reliable if looked after - oil flush is easy
- I think it's not as durable as the manual but doesn't work as hard as the manual due to the inherit design of an auto

Manual
- very strong design - actually designed for the 3T canter trucks
- clutch replacement is relatively expensive but easy
- better fuel economy
- not nice in traffic to keep moving the stick around
- difficult off road in rocky conditions but better downhill engine braking

I bought a gen3 auto and after having an auto I would probably never buy a manual again unless I buy a small nippy pocket rocket.
Re: Manual or Auto
Auto just adds value to your life. I had Hardbody before the Pajero and for traffic auto is a big gain. Less stress and gearing up and down is gone. Livign in Johannesburg the left cald muscle is returning to normal size :D

Tell your brother to be very carefull of the Auto Boxe's, once he buy's one he will never go back to manual :D
Re: Manual or Auto
I used to say that
  • auto boxes are for those who don't have the coordination to work the clutch and the lever at the same time.
  • men drive manual, girls drive auto

Since I bought the Touareg, which is auto, I have moderated my ideas to a certain extent.

Autos are very easy to drive, and make off road driving as easy, .....

...... but I always have this feeling that if something goes wrong in an auto box, it's going to be big bucks! (even though I know that the Mitsu box is very reliable).
It might have to do with the fact that I don't quite understand the workings of an auto box. It still is a bit of black magic to me. Lots of valves, and bands and other fancy trickery.

There is just some solace in selecting a gear, letting out the clutch and knowing that everything from the crank shaft to the wheels are in mechanical contact.

After all that, I doubt whether I will ever buy a manual again ;)

Re: Manual or Auto
The manual or auto choice shouldn't swing a deal. Both are as reliable as can be expected and consumption doesn't really come into it either, so rather look at the rest of the deal to make the call. The km difference between the two and the condition and detail of the service book is more important.

Re: Manual or Auto
Apparently the auto is in better condition, and kilos is lower.

Thanx a million for the input.

Re: Manual or Auto
Are there any common issues on these vehicles to keep in mind or things he have to look out for when he look at one of these Pajero's. Some vehicles tend to rust on a certain spot or have a weak part somewhere, anything you guys know of on these Pajeros?

Re: Manual or Auto
OK, now he had a look at a 2001 3.5 Manual but somebody told him that they have issues with their clutch or flywheel. Is it so?, does anybody know of clutch problems on the 2001 models?
Re: Manual or Auto
I am not aware of any issues as far as reliability or early failure goes.

It is a fact though, that should you need to replace the dual mass flywheel, it costs a few rands.
There have however been successful conversions to a solid flywheel (I am one of them).
