Hi all
What is the modern requirement for "running in" a new vehicle, specifically the MIVEC 3.8 motor. Is it at all necessary other than driving the vehicle normally for the first while?

If I one day buy a car I would keep it below 80% of redline for 2000km. Change the oil (I feel this is crucial to remove the bedding in metal bits for the new engine) and then go as I please.

Thanks, does make sense. Suppose i could change the oil filter at the same time; or is that overkill? Should i get a "genuine" part to "hide" the bit of private maintenance; warranty issues?4ePikanini wrote:........... IMHO definitely change the filter and definitely use genuine (they are cheaper than pirate anyway)

I had an article (and lost it), where they drove a Opel 4-cyl engine for close on 200 000 kms, and only changed the filter every 10000 kms (IIRC). The oil was only topped up as required. No oil changes as such.
At the end of the 'experiment', they found that the engine showed no more wear than one that had the oil changed at regular intervals.
I would not recommend it, let alone do it, but it proves something!

I replaced the oil and filter on the Pajero today. The dealer (Mitsubishi Boksburg) supplied me with a different oil filter though, part no. MD136466. It is slightly shorter than part no. MD352626, anyone out there gone through this exercise.
Had to use this "MD136466" as the original unit is now full of holes, i do not have a strapping tool at home.

I have also heard not to tow anything heavy in the first 2000 km but it might be hearsy otherwise consult your manual.
I am aslo a strong believer in driving decently for the first 2000km just to make sure ring seating takes place normally

It seems that Mitsubishi is also not sure as to what oil filter must be used. I have replaced mine in September 2011 and they gave me the MD136466 one. Last week when another oil change was due the same dealer (Union Motors Nelspruit) supplied me with a MD 352626 and said that it was the only filter to be used. It is very confusing.
