Advice - Extra Spare Wheel or not on long trip
Wow. My first posting.

I am planning a three week trip through Botswana, Zambia, Caprivi, Etosha, Namibia in June. I have been told to carry an extra spare wheel. Is this necessary? If so, where do I find a spare rim and tyre at a reasonable price for my 2006 3.2 DiD SWB A/T?

Help please.

Hi Tick,

Welcome to the Pajero club, I would take a spare tyre at least, there are loads of places along the way that can help with fitment, You can secure the spare tyre to the spare wheel on the door, Cloyd has also made a bracket for a second spare to it behind the spare wheel, Gen3, not sure what model you may have 2006 should be Gen3 though, if Gen4 then not so easy. I would recommend a second spare tyre as minimum without mag or rim, look around and maybe post a wanted ad for a spare tyre, I went to a tyre dealer to get somer any spare tyre in the same size that came off another vehicle and that saved my Bacon on a 3 week trip to Kunene and back, it is only a temp plan so that you have it if you need it. No point spending R4000 on a mag and tyre, lots else to spend that on of course.

Hope that helps

Cheers David

Welcome,

Yip, a spare tyre is worth its weight in gold. I also trundle one along without the rim. The roofrack is as good a place as any to pack it.

It can definitely do no harm!
Rather have one and not need it, than needing one and not have it!

A wheel takes up very much the same space as a tyre, so I would suggest you take a wheel, rather than a tyre.

(Don't let anyone convince you to take a barely serviceable tyre - your spares should be at least as good as your fitted tyres, but that is another discussion! ;) )

Hello and welcome.

I found a rim at a scrpayard in pretoria for R1200 and then bought a tyre. Defintely worth carrying especially on a long/remote trip as you are planning. 1 flat can happen as easily as 2

Rather safe than sorry - I'm taking myne along and putting it on the roofrack.

I bought a rim at TWT for R950 - its not the same as the rest, but only to be used in emergencies :)

Thanks guys. This is fantastic advice.

I could not imagine being out in the sticks and in real trouble. To all that contributed - thanks a million.

Just another point I thought about - being Pajero owners - are there certain spares I should consider taking with me?

Tick,

Gerhard is spot on, must not be a rubbish spare and must still be very usabl, I was lucky to get a decent tyre with 40% tread that I used. I can suggest sending Marcel.roux a pm, he has got a few he is looking to get rid of, including rims, and few BFG AT Tyres all will 80% plus tread some are still brand new!

As for spares, I would suggest some oil, coolant, basic tools, some elctrical wire, volt meter and a spare air filter, don't forget the puncture plugs, much easier and quicker to plug than to change a wheel, also a tyre gauge and a compressor, recovery gear if you are going rough routes.

Diesel filter.
Spare V-belts,
Complete set of coolant hoses.

Failure of the last two constitutes a large percentage of roadside break downs.

I have most of the stuff mentioned except the hoses and spare filters. Makes total sense.

Really appreciate your advice.

Cheers
