How full do you fill up ?

Howdy,
normally when filling with that liquid gold called diesel i let the pump attendand stand there and drip it in till the last drop, but some of them give up easier than others, and some just let it run to the auto stop. There can be quite a diff in the litres depending on how you stop and this obviously have an effect on the consumption figures.
So how do you fill up, till it auto stops or do you let them drip in an extra few litres after the auto stop?
And will the autostop produce more consistant fill-ups?

fill up full blast to first click. Wait a few seconds. Slowly fill up until I hear the next click again.

Too much diesel will just leave marks as the excess gets pushed out the filler cap's vent holes and runs down the side of the vehicle.

I am one of the petrol guys, so I take every last drop when I fill, not sure which is more accurate though.

Between auto stop and shaking my Paj until it absolutely refuses to take any more diesel is a difference of between 7 and 8 litres. I always try to get it to the brim. I've never had it squirt fuel out the vent holes. Anyway, after filling up I usually drive to my house that's just 600m from the fuel station, open the filler cap just to check the level again. Just after 600m of driving the diesel level is invisible. I believe the Paj fuel tank holds a lot of air!

When I fill up, it is till the tank (filler pipe) is absolutely full. I then drive home ± 1km, without any sign of spillage. With a 3,8 engine, every drop in the tank counts.

Yip, different fill-ups will result in different consumption calculations. That is why consumption should only be considered as a true reflection after a number of fill-ups.

Auto stop is very inaccurate, as the "foaming" of the diesel varies between cold and warm, as well as by Filling Station (Don't ask, just noticed it, or maybe the slope of the forecourt?) Most I have put into the tank is 92 liters, but generally about 84... Have done 80 ks' from when the fuel light warning light comes on, but I try not to go past 60 or so. Best 10.8 km/l but normally about 8.2km. Either of them driving like a twit, depending on your point of view!

Always try to fill up early in the morning. The density of fuel when it is cold, is more than when it is warm. This means that you will get more fuel when you fill up when it is cold, than when it is hot. You will get more liters into the tank when cold, than when hot. The planes flying long distance overseas, are always filled up early in the morning to ensure more fuel into the tank.

I fill up to auto stop. I guess it's not very accurate but on my conquest, if you filled it to very full you always had a petrol smell for the first 100km or so, that's why I only fil up to auto stop. Mag van die gewoonte soos hulle se in afrikaans.
