Mud Terrain vs All Terrain
Hi all,

I'll have to replace my tires soon - currently have general grabbers and they're almost shot. They've been suprisingly good on sand.

Do probably 90% tar and use vehicle as daily my driver. I have a young family and wet road safety is important to me. However I'm not a speed freak and mostly keep to the speed limit.

I know, I should be looking at a good set of AT tyres, HOWEVER MT's would look so good on the paj

I've considered BF AT's, but although expensive, apparently they're not good on wet roads and are noisy - still many people swear by them. Would a less aggresive MT like Hankook Dynapro be worse than BF AT in terms of noise and wet road manners ?

I'm not too concerned about noise - I drive a Did  , but then don't really know how noisy MT's are.

If safety for my application would not be too much compromised I will seriously consider muds.

Any suggestions and practical experience with AT and MT on a Pajero specifically would be appreciated.

Hi Wessel

I have the BF mud terrains (bought the pajero with them fitted). They are noisy on tar but under 100km/h it is bearable. I'm not sure how they compare to other tires in regards to wet roads, off road etc because I always drove a platkar so you can't compare. Also, when it's wet I drive like an old tannie (scared of wet roads).

If you live in Pretoria we can arrange a test drive and you can hear what the Mud's noise level is like.

I thought if I had to replace them when time comes I'll go for AT but after my trip last weekend I'm really impressed with there handling on rocks etc. Sand, they dig and dig well in sand so careful driving when on sand.

I'm still new in 4x4 so don't trust anything I say.

Pics so that you see how good Muds look on a pajero :D

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I've had the mud bug for a while now and just started gaining control, thinking sensibly and started turning my mind to AT's. THEN I SAW YOUR PICTURES AND POSTS ABOUT TRACTION IN THE DIGEST LAST NIGHT. Now I'm back to square one with the mud bug  Your Paj looks awesome with those Muds :D

Unfortunaly I'm in Cape Town, but thanks for the offer!

Re: Mud Terrain vs All Terrain
May be a bit off topic, but what size tyres do you have ? They look slightly oversize.

I'm thinking of going 265/75/16 when I upgrade - should have enough space in wheel arches since I upgraded to OME suspension last year.
Re: Mud Terrain vs All Terrain
I have the Hankook Dynpro AT on my Paj and I am Very happy so far, noise is better that the Yoko Geolander H/T's I had on.

I prob did about 2000km with it so can comment too much, but I went to Moegatle the day after I put it on and it was a BIG differance in traction.

Thanks for the feedback Nismo.

Read good reports on the Dynapro AT's, and sounds like a sensible buy.

Hmmmm, I think is is 2xx/75/16. I also have an OME suspension lift. I will have to double check the size but I know its 16s not 17s.

Will check and get back to you on that.

Bfg km2 muds for pajero is 265/75r16 (closet to std 265/70r16). Gives you about 1cm add ground clearance.

Very good offroad and do not get punctures easily. Done 20k on mine and so far so good. Friends around me got punctures on notorious torrabaai road with bfg at, but i had no problems

Neg – very noisy from 80km upwards. Do not advise driving with windows open over 80km/hr. I also took about a 10% knock on consumption when fitted, but also fitted frontrunner roofrack at the same time so not sure which is main culprint. My speedo is now nearly 100% accurate after bigger tyres. 120km/hr speedo = 119 on gps. I have a manual 2001 3.2 did.

Know some people complain on auto's about torque convertor not locking up properly and hunting when driving legal speeds and fitting bigger tyres

Oh forgot. Got ironman suspension, so also slight lift over std. No problem with wheel arch clearance
