Re: NEW to pajero
2000 was the year when the Gen2 was replaced by the Gen3.

If I were in your shoes, I'd look for the best condition, best service record and best priced Gen3. Then worry if it is the diesel or the petrol.

Fuel consumption should be 10-12L/100km for the diesel and 14-16L/100km for the petrol. BUT there is data that suggests an older DiD can get heavier on fuel and then the difference between petrol and diesel can be less.

If you have R100k to splash out, and if you look carefully - you could find a nice 200k km Gen3 SWB out there.

Roelfie, Roelfie!
Stop misleading the man! :)
There are reports of petrol versions averaging way above your quoted figure.
I suggest you drive both petrol and diesel versions. Decide what driving experience you prefer, then factor in the fuel consumption before you make a decision.
Both engines are gems.

In my opinion the Mitsu V6 is a good solid design, but the DiD falls into the category of great engines. It has proven itself over time to be offer a great mix of durability, reliability, performance and fuel economy.

Re: NEW to pajero
I've got a 2001 gen 3 v6 LWB and get about 14-16L/100km on the highway and gravel roads, and 16-18L/100km around town. I have gotten as high as 20L/100km with an exceptionally heavy foot, (the inherent danger of the v6 is that it sounds so damn good). I recently did a leg of a trip with mostly harsh gravel roads, river crossings and 2 mountain passes thrown in, and managed 14.4L/100km. The economy seems to improve offroad, obviously Pajie is most happy when he's in his element ;)

DiD is a superb piece of Japanese kit, but with an older engine the issue of how festiduolously the previous owner has looked after it becomes more important. If you can find one with a solid history of love and care, great! But for a 10+ year old car with an unknown service history, I would rather go petrol. If I look at what else you can buy for R100k, the extra fuel bill seems like a fair deal to drive an incredible car.
