Gen4 and Cat removal
I went to Speedy in Midrand to have a look at removing my CAT, and there I'm told that I have 2 CATS...

Being the first I've heard of it, I decided to go check what my Ellery's manual says (cant find my Haynes one - maybe someone can check what it says)...and it only shows one CAT.

So, Questions 1:

The typical CAT is easy to identify, but is this other one that sitting close to the engine also a CAT?
The suspected 2nd CAT
The suspected 2nd CAT
The usual CAT
The usual CAT
Q2:
I assume its pointless to replace the usual CAT if there is one right near the engine? So will have to put a straight pipe there as well.

Q3: I'm worried about affecting the sound / noise - dont want it to change dramatically. So I'm thinking of doing the following:
  • I want to replace the big box in the middle, as this is quite a low point under the belly of the car. Will replace it with a smaller free flow box (with a slight off set for more noise reduction). But I'm worrying that this will affect the sound a lot.
  • So I'm thinking of putting in another small box where the normal cat usually sits.
Opinions?

Dont worry about the sound, it's a turbo diesel, unless you make an effort to get more sound(straight pipe) you are not going to hear the difference between stock & freeflow

I couldn't hear the difference after the freeflow was installed & cat removed on my old Triton 3.2 unless you went to the back and listened very carefully.

Both mine are being removed next weekend.
Re: Gen4 and Cat removal
Thanks for the feedback swartjan.

I'm thinking then a little box in place of the cat is not necessary.

I suppose the tritons also only have one CAT? Or does yours also have that box close to the engine?

Re: Gen4 and Cat removal
Hi GT, the Triton only one big cat just behind the turbo, here is a pic of the downpipe we replaced it with. The rest of the system only had one freeflow box.

On Saterday we are going to do the same on the Pajero, I'll post a pic of the system when we are done.

Re: Gen4 and Cat removal
OK. I think I've answered my own question.

Found my Haynes manual, and this is what they say (although not in a lot of detail...):

So they call it 'turbo charger exhaust adapter', so its not a CAT.

Good news - makes things simpler.

Will try do a before and after vid...

Hmmmm, I think we posted at the same time...

And seems the Haynes is not descriptive enough.

Pajeromania, If I read that diagram correct it seems there are 2 CATS!

Anybody agree??

As shown in the Parts Catalog - Pajero `07
Re: Gen4 and Cat removal
Ok, some more questions:

It seems that the Pajero only had a lambda sensor before the first cat, and no others after that - anybody found any others?

So this should mean that the engine light won't come on due to the cat removal.

But won't the mixture of air/unburnt fuel read differently on the sensor if the cat is removed? (lower back pressure meaning lower unburnt fuel in air reading). Wont the richness of the air/diesel mixture be affected then? Potentially causing too rich mixture to be used?

Hi Guys

If i may ask, why do you remove CAT? Does it have bad effects in car? My 2003 3500 gdi has habit on showing engine light when it passes 120kmh, or when i make changedown to overtake. I have been told by a mechanic that i should remove CAT. I went to some guys and they said the cat has been removed, after they looked under the car. Does this equipment has 2 CATS? The car doesnt fail after this light show up.

Can someone help. The light makes me sick.
