Driving in 4*4 mode all the time
Hi

I recently procured a Pajero GLS (2012) and would like to know if it is adviseable to drive in the 4*4 mode all the time? Will I cause damage? I am going on a long road trip, thus my question.
As per my username, I know but nothing about this stuff, but would like to get my kidds into the "real world"

Thank you very much.
Re: Driving in 4*4 mode all the time
I can't see any reason why not, provided you don't engage either rear diff lock or centre transfer case lock while on hard surfaces eg asphalt.

There are advantages:
  • Better / safer road holding, especially in the wet.
  • Tests show that the fuel consumption is similar (if not lower) in 4WD.
  • Tyre wear is more equal than on RWD.
My other SUV is a VW Touareg, with permanent 4WD, and I have become very used to the superior traction.

Re: Driving in 4*4 mode all the time
Mitsubishi has stated that the Pajero is a permanent four wheel drive car, with rear wheel drive as an option to save fuel.

You certainly won't be damaging your Pajero by running in 4H and it sure as heck will be more stable under emergency conditions.

I recommend you run it in both 2H and 4H and see how you find the car. You have an onboard fuel consumption read-out, that should help to guide you with your preferred mode of driving.

I have convinced myself that 4H consumes more fuel, but we all know how difficult it is to compare tank on tank because there are so many variables that could influence consumption.

Either way - enjoy your new car and drive safely.

I have been driving my Pajero in 4H now for more than 4 years without any problems and with very reasonable fuel consumption (10.7 l/100km). I don't have to do anything when leaving the tar - I just continue with the journey.

Re: Driving in 4*4 mode all the time
Hi I have found my pajero 2012 3.2 diesel very loose on the road and since the four by four course by pajero I have been using 4x4 permanently unless parking in places I need more turn and have enjoyed the exstra road holding. Not going back ever! the road holding is superior and fuel consumption negligble.

Re: Driving in 4*4 mode all the time
If your handling on tar is loose in 2H, something is wrong.

There is virtually no difference in normal handling on dry tar between 2H and 4H (unless your are doing extreme cornering at high speed).

Also, I found no difference in turning circle between 2H and 4H - are you perhaps running with the difflock on? (4HL)? If yes, this will cause excessive tyre wear on tar roads, not to mention the drive train wear / axle windup.

:D Mnr Tuinvurk,
Thanks for your response

Gave me something to think about

I think that four by four should provide more traction than two by four

I was traveling at 120 kms per hour and there were sweeping curves and with body roll I felt unsafe

I do not have the same problem with the four by four and know that traction on all wheels will get me throught the corners

I have done about 5 000 kms since turning to four by four and have realy noticed the difference! perhaps in my mind.

also your comment that there must be something wrong ... The vechicle feeling " loose" well it was still new(10 000) and all I think it may be is that the " road tyres" geolander perhaps the problem

I want to change to AT soon but do not want to do so with tyres only done 15 000

as per your suggestion that I may have had diff lock engaged well def not.

I have been driving a audi S3 Quatro for some years and can feel the difference when I drive another plat kar not in all wheel drive

i have also found the road holding of the suv much different from conventional cars perhaps because of the hight and weight of the suv

Even the manual warns about less cornering capabillities ( nissan X Trail)

Perhaps I have a bad habbit of driving at about 140 kms per hour regularly with the SUV.

Since my birthday and reading the forum regularly I am trying to use speed control so that I maintain about 121. I need to act my age!

Bottom line.

Thanks a lot for your response as I am new to the forum and that was my first post allthough I always read your comments

Even though you can in theory - I would not. (On tar)
I travelled 1000 km towing (on tar) in 4H as an "expert" advised I would lessen the stress on the drivetrain, and it made sense. After 1000 km, on a trip I developed aleak on the front drive shaft. I replaced the seal and drove in 2 H / 4x4 all modes ( but on gravel or wet tar only) - no problems.

Then - another long trip, 4H, towing and the leak appeared again. I stopped e 4H on tar and the leak has disappeared - 30k Km's with no problems, again, in all modes - even long periods in 4 Wheel drive on sand in Moz.

Spoke to an experienced Mechanic onPajeros who said while theoretically possible, don't do it unless you have wet or similar conditions.

Just my input. Good luck.

Sorry, didn't mean to upset! Just sharing my experience. Agree, provides more traction, but maybe I'm too chilled a driver :ugeek: High speed cornering will definitely be better with 4x4. Driving at around 100km/h in JHB on the highways I've not really noticed the difference between 2H and 4H (my gen4 is 5 years old with over a 100k kms.)

Again, just my experience. Tested it again today - almost no difference between 2H and 4H turning circle with no central diff engaged.

Maybe it's just my car? Anyone else's experiences?
