Vibration??

Good day gents,

I have a 2005 Paj 3.2 D-iD GLX with 180 000 on the clock. I have noticed a vibration when I accelerate at most speeds and whether gently or flooring it. The vibration lasts a few seconds then goes. If I lift off it is there momentarily and when I accelerate it is back for a few seconds.

I am not technically minded but I think it might be the propshaft that requires balancing or a bearing replaced.... or it could be the overhead sump!!

Any ideas?

I had a similar vibration (although on a Gen 2) and also thought it was the propshaft etc. It turned out just to be the exhaust being loose.

Thanks for the reply guys. I will have to get under the Paj this weekend and fiddle and shake things.

Inner shaft bearing??? How do I find this where is it located?
I think I should download a workshop manual if one is available. This vibration is really destroying my driving pleasure and the way I feel about the vehicle...

Gazza,

The fact that the vibes only last a short while under acceleration (and deceleration), makes me doubt if the problem is propshaft related.

Are you absolutely happy that the transmission oil is in perfect order and at the perfect level?

What is the stall speed on the DiD's lock-up clutch? On my V6 it sits at just under 3000rpm.

See if the vibes occur if you drive at 3000rpm and then accelerate?

the lockup is dynamic. It can happen at low or high revs.

The way I understand the system (and I tested mine on the road) is that it does not disengage above a certain rev-limit.

My concern with the OP is that the vibration could be related to the tranny, rather than the propshaft.

The way it is described makes me wonder if it isn't most noticeable when the clutch disengages.

or msybe the lockup clutch is slipping?

I also noticed that it does sometimes vibrate even when cruising... It is not a huge vibration, like shudder, not is it a minor irritation. I have had the vehicle for about a month now and this only started about 2 weeks ago. I also noticed that if I have my foot lightly on the accelerator and turn a corner the vibration comes back (haven't fully tested if this always happens or if it is just now and then)...

sounds to me like it could be the inner shaft bearing.

Look for the front right halfshaft with a CV boot at either end. The inner CV boot will have a (usually green) receiving cup that looks like it's bolted to the innershaft with 4 nuts and bolts.

Try to move that green cup up and down and from side to side. If there is any play then that bearing has failed.
