I have been thinking about removing the catalitical converter on my pajero when it reaches 100 000 kilos

It is a 2012 3.2 glx

Why, 100 000 you may ask, as I heard it may affect the guarantee (one mechanic seems to think there is a way around it)

Anyway the vehicle has now done 32 000 kilos and goes extremely well

On a previous vehicle(nissan x trail 2.2 diesel) I had endless problems just on 100 000km and was sent from pillar to post

the agents wanted R48 000 to replace the injectors and was talking about changing the turbo!

I was devastated and only knew that this is not what was going to happen

I had the injectors cleaned, as every where I went I was told that they could not be reconditioned as South Africa does not have the equipment for 2.2 engines

I then had the turbo checked and serviced and the vehicle still had no power and smoked like a train

Someone suggested removal of the cat

This was undertaken as by then I was desperate and cost had been running up past R6000 at only R2 200 this was done very professionally I thought

The vechile returned to normal operation and the problem was fixed

You can imagine why I never took my vehicle back to the agents!!!!!

So is it a good idea to replace the cat after 100 000?

Has anyone some advice

I have also been thinking of chipping the vehicle

My vehicle is running soundly but my back side is burning to effect " improvements" for consumption and some more grunt?

One of the main reasons I keep on replacing my "old" Pajeros with a new Pajero, is the uncompromising reliability that comes standard with Pajero.

I would be very hesitant to mess around with a new Pajero if I were in your shoes.

I would not do it.
I did mine on 120000km recently and found the cat very clean with no blockages.It had no other effect on my car when i removed it.I purely did it because I bought the car second hand and was not sure what fuel the guy used and how it was driven and looked after.
Save the money to do it and rather add the odd injector cleaner fluid every now and then to keep things clean

Diesel cars don't block up CATs like petrol cars.

My 2001 pajero 3.2 had it's CAT removed at 250'000km and it was still clean.

In my view I would leave it well alone. If you have a DPF then I would consider removing the DPF after 100'000km as they tend to clog up.

That sorts it for me. I will no longer have the urge to remove the cat.

Is there anyone who has had the140Kw engine chipped?

Is chipping also an itch I should do without?

I was told that the cat causes the turbo to run hotter than without the cat. At the end it is your choice if you want to remove it.

I fitted a Unichip (SAC Centurion) to my 2011 3.2 DiD SWB before going on a 6000km trip to Namibia/Botswana, recently. My main motivation was fuel consumption pulling my Bush Lapa trailer along. The vehicle turned out to be noteably more powerfull than before and I can't recall a single incident when the auto box changed back to 4th on any uphill I encountered at normal driving speeds (100 to 110 km/ph. Fuel consumption I thought was somewhat disappointing (got about 14L/100kms on average when towing)- perhaps I am in cookoland?. I have just had the chip removed for taking the vehicle in for its 40000 km service and could immediately noticed the rather significant drop in low ref performance. Will monitor fuel consumption to see if there is a noteable difference (first impressions are that the consumption seem to be higher now that the chip is out - sounds very contradictory, hence the intention to monitor over the next couple of days) - I do miss the extra woema though, so have already decided to replace the chip asap after my fuel consumption monitoring exercise. Now I am satisfied that I must stop fiddling! The fitting of the chip can wait till 100 000 kms as I think it is a bit of a slepp to chip and remove for services unless this can be done at a low cost.

What was the cost to chip?

My Pajero is running so nicely here at the coast and even on the trip to Cape Town with the consumption much improved when I removed the rooftop and awning and was not towing. All in all even towing enough power and fuel consumption very reasonable. The problem more the cost of fuel!
