Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Who would do such a thing :o ?

My very good friend, and often overland partner, is busy swapping his 2003 DiD GLS LWB (270k km) for a Gen4 3.8V6 with 85k km on the clock.

He has first hand experience of the performance and consumption of my car and is happy to get one himself.

buying a pajero diesel or petrol is like winning the lotto or the powerball.

Either way it's a good buy. It's a pajero. You can't go wrong with that!

Hi

I am also contemplating such a change or to 2006 3.8 non mivec.

Just sold my 2001 did LWB manual after I had for about 5 years. I did the calc and facturing in the more frequent service interval and fuel price diff, the petrol comes out only R0.15 per km more expensive. The diesel price climbs faster than petrol due to high demand of diesel, so may become smaller. I Used 6km/lt for petrol and 9km/lt for diesel. I only use it on weekends and trips, so not my daily drive.

Now looking around for one with pref about 130k km or less. My Did was sold on 237k km, so looking for something with a little less kms. The problem is that few people sell there Pajero's before hitting about 200k

Regards
Bennie

Hi
Interesting calc. I have a 3.5 and get on my daily trafic drive about 6.25 - 6.3km/l. This holiday with a loaded roofrack I got 7.2km/l. No roofrack on open road 7.8km/l. I am sure that would diminish any differences.

In addition the Did is a very boring drive compared to the 3.8 or 3.5.

Best of luck

You need to factor in the expensive timing belt and spark plug service every 90k as well.

BUT, I think that the 3.2DiD really should get a diesel pump and injector service/overhaul at 200k. If not, there is a real risk of engine damage that is just too costly to ignore. The lucky DiD owners get the electronics warning them of a pump that is under performing, but the unlucky ones get the first warning when the engine fails due to poor injector performance.

I believe both motors deserve a waterpump, thermostat, cap, hoses and coolant replacement at the 200k mark as well. For the petrol motors one should do this at the 180k service, when the timing belt is replaced.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Roelf, how much is the 90k interval service And timing belt @ 180k on the petrol approx if done at Mitspro - ie not at the stealers? I still think this would be less than the injector & pump service on the Did as I've seen figures of around R50k for that.

I have no idea what Mitspro would charge, but I'm sure that a sum of less than R9k should get the job done - even at the dealers.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Thanx Roelf. Should definately be less than injectors & pump over 200k km distamce then.

My Did was still a manual transmisson and parts alone quote dual mass flywheel & clutch alone was R22k excl labour. The fear of that and the injectors and pump made me sell it on 237k km (problem free except for recurring front wheel bearing problem).

I am now seriously considering petrol replacement due to less expensive maint & pay a bit more at the pump. As it is not my daily drive and I will only do about 10k km per year with it. The only problem is that the 3.8 is becoming scarce- especially the LWB version.

So you are looking for one in the 100k km range?

There is one on the Natal North Coast for R340k with 85k on

and

A black Gen3 with 98k on for R190k in Jhb.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Yip. Saw the black one on autotrader just now. Just a pity about the color- rest is 100% what I am looking for.

Looking in the R200-R250k price range. I am from Windhoek, Namibia, so bit of hassle to import from SA with VAT, but am seroiusly considering it to fly down and drive back. I have to pay the 14% Sa vat & then 16.5% Namibian import Vat and wait about 2 months for the Sa Vat refund...
