Can't you get your dusty, sandy paws on a "grey import"?

For that money you'll be able to buy a VX Cruizer on the grey import market - as long as you have no intention to emmigrate soon.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
I can, but imports are somewhat risky as they never have a service history, so have no way to verify the km's. The insurance is more expensive if you can get cover. A lot of them have different panels & parts, that might have to be imported from overseas, so insurance is becoming wary as is difficult to get 2nd value, as might not have same local model for that year.

Most of the imports also have older engine derivations - Ie Gen 3 with 2.8 4M40 or Gen4 with 3L V6. A lot of them also have 4 speed auto or manual transmission, as you probably do not do much long distance driving in Japan.

I viewed an 2006 3.5 the other day with an alleged 70K km on it, but the driver seat, steering wheel etc looked worse than my 2001 with 237K on it. In SA this would already be a 3.8

For a VX cruizer, it would be a 2001 or earlier model with over 300K on it and most of them have so must plastic crap on it to make it look like a mini racer, that we will have to replace both bumpers if you want to venture anyware offroad.

You can have a look around yourself: http://www.namcars.com.na

The grey "import" prices are also not much different than SA models and should carry at least a 25% discount for the increased risk in my opinion

There are a couple of Pajero Evo's around that has any Pajero lover envious.

Thanks for that heads-up.

My buddy who lives in SA had a VX import. He bought and registered it in his brother's name, who lives in Whk. Was a nice enough car, but all the instructions on display were in Japanese.

After a Richtersveld and Damaraland trip (with me in a 2006DiD LWB GLS), he sold his Cruizer and bought a DiD. Now he has traded his DiD for a 3.8V6 - after another Damaraland trip together
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Thanks for all the info Roelf.

I was really tempted with the black 3.8 on Auto Trader. I ran the service history at the agents the morning on the Vin nr, but they have no record of the big 90K cambelt service (last on record at 75K).

Also, all 4 brake discs & pads were replaced 3x by the 75K service, which seems excessive, so guess previous owner must have had a pretty aggressive driving style. Surely a disc should last longer - especially the rear ones.

Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Gen 3s are a little heavy on the discs, but I agree that it sounds excessive to have changed them three times by 75000 km. I replaced discs every 90000 km due to shudders developing.

I have to agree that 3 x discs in 75k is not normal. It does smell like a reason to be carefull. Either the car was driven poorly or there is an underlying reason for the dealers opting to change the discs - both counts as a warning to a prospective buyer.

I have just trawled the Autotrader again and your optiones are limited.

Well Bennie, make me an offer I can't refuse for my beast and I'll even deliver it in Windhoek, if you so wish
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
I am not that much in a hurry. Not my daily drive & I can borrow my dad's Gen2 2.8 lwb if needed as he seldomly drives it since he got a 2006 3.2 swb did...

I am sure the right one will come up over the next few months. If I can stretch my budget a bit more I might even go for the Gen4 with mivec. I am not certain at this stage whether it is worth the 30-40k extra for slightly newer model with more km's... The power figures on mivec looks inviting though...

I have had my 3.8 serviced on 90 000km in Milneron CT in November 2013 and paid R9 600.00. Nothing exta-ordinary was done - just liquids and belts. Almost fell off my chair. Specifically considering that the Clubcab 90 000km service cost about R5K couple of months earlier.

Chum,

If ever there was a service that requires negotiation and planning before committing, it is this one.

On a previous 3.8V6 (Gen3 SWB) I had, I missed the maint plan by a few months - I had the wrong date in my head. That one came to R9k. Luckily this time round it happened under the maint plan, but at 180k km I'm in for the high jump AND I should be quietly retired by then. I'll want to replace the water pump and all the hoses and cooling stuff as well. At the current 15k km per year, I have almost five years to save up for that service
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Looks like I should plan to have the 90K done when I am SA.

The quote a got from the Windhoek dealership this morning was R15K, so stop complaining. Over here Mitsubishi is still with the Mercedes garage so they and Imperial SA probably add their markup. To my knowledge Imperial only has 2nd car sales over here and no specific dealerships.
