Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
I had the following done at Mitspro in 2011 on my 3.5 V6:
-Full service
-Battery tray fixed
-Oil filter
-Engine Oil
-ATF
-Wipers
-Cam belt & tensioner
-Front disk pads

The total was R4953. Even at 10% increase pa, it would still be less than R7k now.

The other advantage is that the petrol is a lot cheaper to repair than a diesel. I just had the head gasket done, along with a few other things, and it included an oil change and new spark plugs, all for R7700. Have a look what something similar would be on a DiD.

Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
The petrol also seems to be R20-30k cheaper when shopping for a R200k car- for same year, same km's.

The funny thing is that per the book values, the petrols retail price is about R6k more than the diesel, so does not reflect what I have seen on autotrader. With this purchase price difference, I need to drive close to 90k km for the diesel to reach break even with the petrol. The book also seem to have a mistake on the 2007 gen4 petrol, as value is R20k below 2007 Gen3 per the Aug 2013 book. They probably swapped them around...

Only problem is 2006/7/8 petrol models with less than 150k km on them seem to be very scarce.

I will just have to keep on looking.

Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Maybe I spoke to soon. I found a great 2008 3.8 lwb with 150k km & a full franchise history as a private sale. Busy finalising the deal & will hopefully fly down to Jhb towards the end of next week to collect & drive back to Windhoek over next weekend.

Why the Namibian banks are busy phasing out petrol cards now, just when I will really start using it for the 3.8 onboard's entertainment system - & no I am not talking about the Rockford sound... Most service stations in Namibia do not accept debit card payments yet, so will be a bit of a schlepp to fill up more frequently and pay cash, but hopefully worth it.

Ps - Cats I am also a bean counter, so their goes your theory as I am switching a Did for a 3.8.... The Problem is I also like dunes & my friends drive 4.8 patrols & 4l hilux's

Well Ben,

Congrats are in order by the sound of things.

Do you have any early pics you can post?
How much is it going for? - (If you wish to share that info)
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Hi

Just cancelled on the deal on 99.9%, so looking again. :(

I already read through the 8 page post early this morning on how to fix the dash if needed...

I was just about to pay the guy a R5000 deposit to keep the car for me till end of next week when he started with the funny business when needed to email me copies of registration docs to start arranging for the necessary permits.

The seller broke the news that the car is still registered in the name of a Nissan dealership from whom he bought it from in Dec 13 to tow his boat to the Weskus? Why is he selling it if only had it for 2 months max? Secondly - he wants to register in the name of his brother with a different surname and I should pay the deposit to his brothers account. Just to many warning lights.

Car is listed for R175 000, but would cost me R204 000 after Namibian import VAT @ 16.5%. Car is listed on http://www.automart.co.za It would have saved me the hassle with reclaiming the SA vat, as would have no VAT on a private sale & it can take up to 6 months to get the VAT back. The other one listed for R200K on automart is allready sold.

The service history on the VIN nr checked out as only wipers, break pads etc and timing belt on 09K, but this does not cover the period which he had the car.

There was one for sale in the Paarl at a dealership for R190K in Dec with 165 000km, but at this stage I was afraid of the kms, as wanted to go max 150K. I am maybe changing my mind on this. Price therefore not that good to be true, as this R165K excl VAT.
Probably true, if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is.

Damn,

Rather safe then sorry - I agree, too many questions around this deal.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Roelf, could you please provide your opinion, as you seem to have owned both the 3.8 & 3.8 Mivec.

To me, my options are narrowed down to around a 2005 Gen 3 3.8 non mivec with around 150K km's for R150K or a 2007/8 Mivec for around R200K. The million dollar question is whether the new shape, gizmo's and increased engine power is really worth an extra R50K. You can do a nice trip & get some extra accesories for 50K. Resale value not that much of a factor to me, as will probably drive it for at least 5 years again, so should not make that much of a difference over that time frame.

A 2006/7 Gen3 seems to be a no go, as there is only about a R10-15K difference between Gen3 & 4 on a 2007 model with the same km's, so that is no brainer to me.

R50K seems like a lot for not getting a lot extra. If the engines was the same, it would also be a no brainer to me. I know the sound is a lot better that the Gen3, with the new rockford system, but you can replace the radio & speakers with a nice new bluetooth unit for around R3500 if I install myself.

On the gen3, I can also buy a set of 16" mags and re-use my BFG muds from my old car that only did around 25K km.

The brain says the gen3 is the better buy, but having allready owned a gen3, their is an itch for a gen4. Hopefully it will enough of an upgrade to come from a 3.2did to v6 and also from manual transmission to auto.

Don't forget the later Gen3s were 17" rims AFAIK.
Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Thanks Andrew, I am aware of that. I think it changed to 17" in 2004/5 facelift. 5x 16" Mags are not that expensive- around R5.5K or even less if can get 2ndhand. The 16" BFG KM2 muds now retails around R3.3Kea in Windhoek vs 17" that goes for R4.3K ea.

The idea is that I will then have 2 sets of tyres. 17" with road tyres and 16" for offroad. You can fit a 16" rim to the gen3, but the brakes to large on a gen4, so not an option to change.

Re: Trading a 3.2DiD for a 3.8V6 MIVEC
Bennie,

My comparative ability between the two motors is unfortunately scewed because my Gen3 was a SWB.

Let me put it to you like this: to me the SWB Gen3 pulled the same as the LWB Gen4. In other words a Gen3 LWB should feel the same as a Gen4 LWB with 400-odd kg loaded inside. Does my logic make sense? Does my logic assist you at all?

I really enjoyed my SWB with the 3.8V6 motor. It remeinded me of my GTi's in the mid to late 80's

Don't let 30kw be the decider. Look at the whole picture, which is clearly what you are doing.

Good luck and enjoy.
