Here is my opinion after reading many posts in this and other forums:
We need to put 10c/km away for the gearbox.
We need to put a further 10c/km away for cambelt, plugs and water pump(v6) or injectors and diesel pump(DiD).
So when you buy your Pajero, you need to factor that into your budget.
Roelf I think you are spot on. I also came to this conclusion recently. Unless off course if you keep on selling on and never stop paying cars off.

Good input Roelf. Thank you.
You can also add between 10c (highway terrain) and 18c (all terrain) per km for tyre replacement. Based on a reasonably extensive exercise that I just undertook looking at 8 specific tyre models (265/70 R16) from 7 tyre vendors. I didn't get a quote for every tyre from every vendor.
My calculations were between around R12k lowest to R22k highest for 6 tyres. I arrived at the above c/km by assuming that rotating these 6 tyres gives 120000km of usable life. This does not allow for intermediate balancing and alignment, which would add maybe another 1c/km.

What is the problem with the gearbox?RoelfleRoux wrote:Here is my opinion after reading many posts in this and other forums:

Nothing wrong with the gearboxes - quite the opposite.
BUT,
If you have a box that didn't get new oil every 60k km or one that wasn't properly used off-road/heavy load, then it appears that around 300k km they tend to need new bits and pieces.
It is about oil that gets into a poor state and then the clutches wear and the oil gets more contaminated and the filter gets blocked.... and so the snowball gets momentum.
