The other problem I picked up with crossing deep water was that my main front crank seal started leaking in the week after I crossed a river that was slightly deeper than the previous time I crossed it. The first time I crossed it easy but the second I was lazy to check. When I realised the water was deeper I just went a bit faster to keep the bow wave going, at on stage the water reached bonnet height but I managed to pass successfully.
Lesson I learned: Dont buy an aftermarket crank seal, not even at a place like Seal centre, rather wait the week or 2 for Mitsubishi to order it for you it if they have no stock, it is a lot of labour (stripping lots of components)to replace the crank seal especially if you have to do it again in 2-3months.
Thanks all for the interest and responseJust to conclude, I replaced the gearbox oil and yes the diff oil had water in! I believe it takes about ten liters and the first liter that was drained looked watery
Also got my fridge working!

I do notice the Pajero is smoking like white or blue smoke? When starting?
Could be the diesel here at Musina?

I like to ad a word of caution about the use of snorkels.
I don't have experience with snorkels on Pajeros, but a lot with Land Cruisers.
Snorkels are primarily designed to inhale cooler and cleaner air. Most are not water-tight and not designed to be used under water. There is also in many cases a little drain at the bottom of the air cleaner housing where water can enter if submersed for too long with a running engine.
To prevent water intake in the axle housings, there is a simple way to permanently deal with the issue, I raise the breathers. I do the following: Remove the breathers from the axle housing, replace this with a small device over which you can slide a hose pipe and lead this hose pipe to a higher point on the vehicle. In the front I fix it next to the rocker cover and at the rear next to the fuel filler or sometimes the taillight.
I have not done this to my Pajero yet, so I can't give more details.

We had almost similar experience near Mankwe Bush lodge. I drove a Colt D/C 4x4 and the other vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi Sync Trail Rated .... the whole alphabet. Water was not too deep, just about bumper deep with one little ditch. Colt made it no problem, Jeep .. stopped. As the water was not deep we urge him to start, there could not be a problem .. CLANG CLANG & OIL .. Engine gone. Afterwards we realised the air intake was behind the bumper - HOW STUPID this design. The Jeep had to go back on a low bed...
