Re: Pajero Transmission ATF
Hi Andrew, mine was aslo from the dealers. We didn't do a flush nor the filter. Only 4L out and one can of 4L in. The oil that came out appeared to be in perfect condition.

Re: Pajero Transmission ATF
I can confirm the 4 out 4 in. Living in the UK, brought the Pajero over with me, when the dealers do the ATF change they only remove the drain plug and then refill with the same amount that came out.I have questioned it with them but this is what they do. They reckon that the gearbox does not require a full drain, as long as the maintenance schedule is followed all should be OK. If you are doing a lot of off-roading and the oil is working harder for extended periods, then the schedule must be altered accordingly.

Re: Pajero Transmission ATF
The Mitsu workshop manual is quite clear (and I have just done this procedure today).

1. Disconnect front pipe at ATF heat exchanger that is built into bottom of radiator. From that front pipe run a temporary piece of clear tubing into eg an empty Delo 400 container (because it has a sight gauge with nice volume markings at each litre and it can take 5l). Start the engine AND a timer. Stop when either one minute is up OR 4litres has been discharged.

** in my case only about 3.7 litres came out before the flow became erratic and I stopped and moved to step 2.

2. Remove autobox drain plug. Expect about 2litres to drain from here.

** In my case less than 1 litre drained from autobox sump.

So up to that point, according to the book, you should have removed 4 + 2 = 6 litre.

3. I added a step here: With the drain plug still open throw a litre of clean DiaQueen in the filler (ATF dip stick tube). Curse because the DiaQueen container does not pour nicely when full and spills ATF all over the place.

4. Replace ATF sump plug with new sump plug washer. Torque to 32Nm.

5. Add 6 litres of DiaQueen. So now you have used 6litre + 1litre, but the autobox has in it pretty much the same volume of oil as when you started the exercise.

6. Drain another 4 litres out the front pipe of the ATF heat exchanger. So now you have removed 7 + 4 = 11 litre and added 1 + 6 = 7 litre.

7. Reconnect the loop at the ATF heat exchanger on the radiator.

8. Add back to cold mark on dip stick - should be about 4 litre. So now you have removed 7 + 4 = 11 litre and added 1 + 6 + 4 = 11 litre. Start the engine and move the gear lever to all possible positions while stationary.

9. Let the whole caboodle stand for some minutes so that you are sure that the ATF has drained from the dip stick tube. Recheck that the ATF is at least at the COLD mark.

10. Take car for a gentle drive to get ATF to operating temperature.

11. Check that ATF level is between the TWO HOT marks on the dipstick while the engine is running and the car is in neutral. Top up if necessary.

So you need to purchase 3 * 4litre cans = 12litres to do the job thoroughly.

I can confirm the price of around R450 incl. for one 4l can if my memory serves me well.

Regarding the recommended procedure that uses 11l, maybe next time  :?
