Hello all

Die Valk has a chi chi chi sound to it when I pull away. its intermittent and I think its more pronounced when I corner. I also believe that it was much more pronounced when the vehicle was in 4HLc the otherday driving slowely and cornering.

A tire, brakes and suspension guy told me its the drive shaft bearings...?

Any help or idea? I passed on a 4x4 opportunity this past weekend because I am worried for being stranded on a mountain somewhere stupid... This no confidence is not a lekker feeling at all!

Have you looked to see if there is a drive shaft bearing on your car? - I think there isn't.

The symptoms point towards the rear CV joints. First thing I would do it to inspect the rubber boots that protect the CVs. Even if all the boots are intact, would I suggest you have new grease packed into those CVs.

I dont know the drive train that well.

I did check the CV boots the other day when i did wheel balancing - all was fine and looked good. The one CV boots rubber looked a bit aged but everything else looked good.

I doubt it is propshaft bearings. Does it only happen at speed or can you replicate it also at slow speed? Maybe have someone walk next to vehicle to listen. Are you sure ain't just brakes?

Dont worry about getting stranded with a chi-chi-chi noise. Usually a chi-chi-chi noise will become a lot more noisy, and easier to find, before it goes bang . Its the silent ones you need to worry about.

I generally hear the noise at low speed when pulling away and not while actually driving.

I do have some screeching rear brakes from dust... which becomes more and less pronounced depending on the distance of dirt roads I do.

but the chi chi chi is on a different pitch than the screech

What about it being wheel bearings?

It could be brake pad related. Anti-rattle clips can make strange noises.
Put your foot lightly on the brakes when pulling away.
Does it change the noise at all?

Check for anything that possibly got stuck close to the drive and prop shafts (wire, twig, etc)
It might just be touching either the propshaft or one of the drive shafts.
I had this once, and it nearly drove me nuts.

My suggestion will basically correspond with 4E's.

Take you garden hose and use full force to clean all the dust from your disks - both inside and outside. Go for a drive - the noise should be gone until a new layer of dust has settled on the disks and pads.

So i put on some nice new tekkies this weekend. Seems that solved a lot of issues incl the chi chi chi and bad vibrations around 130km/h.

I also checked the wheel bearings, propshafts and CV boots while she was on the ramp. And all seems good!

Only the one CV has the smallest of a nick right where it seats on the wheel.

There was a litlle bit of greese around the nick. I cleaned it up and will keep an eye on it.

I still need to check how much it will cost to re-grease the CV's.
