Re: Namibia 2015
So is this what it looks like if you change a tyre or what happened there Roelf?

By the way the Pajero convoy looks most impressive led by the fire engine!

Re: Namibia 2015
I plugged a small hole at Palmwag. When a second small hole halted our progress at the border on SA side, I decided to replace all four while passing through Jhb. They were down to 3-4mm tread and needed replacing soonish in any case. Couldn't source GY AT/SA on the public holiday, so got "talked" into Khumo AT tyres. Time will tell!!

Re: Namibia 2015
My thoughts on prepping for Namibia, this next trek will be our 7th trip, all but one taking in Kaokoland.

Carry a complete 2nd spare wheel, not just a tyre.

Fit those new tyres, 50% missing tread depth has caught me out twice. It's hot, hard and heavy going at times.

Be sure your tow bar is bolted fully, not missing those two hard to fit bolts and nuts.

Tyre plug kit and a jack which will fit under the axle/hub when the tyre is flat and the truck laden. Digging a jack pit is not always easy.

Stay together what ever happens, breakdowns or not. "Meet you in ...." isn't certain.

Enjoy your trip.

Re: Namibia 2015
Hi Trekker,
Your points are valid. I spent six years as an exploration geologist in the bush (of which one year was in Namibia).
I have a very good idea of what "best practise" is, but reality also has to come into play.
We were four Pajeros with identical wheels, so we all felt there were enough spare wheels to get us through.
You will see higher in this thread that I considered new tyres, but where do you draw the line and what do you do with the perfectly good old tyres?
The first puncture was a small hole between the tread blocks, so I'm not convinced that more tread would have helped much. The second one happened on the tar section between Kahn and the border. This one was a small hole next to the tread, where it meets the sidewall. We were "forced" off the road by a very wide mining dumptruck bucket in transport. Maybe that is where it happened.
The standard jack on my car is really right for the job.
Staying together is really important - we split up in Windhoek to speed up the buying of food, drinks and permits. This resulted in one car getting robbed of all their cash in mid town in broad daylight.
