In the last few months I've noticed my floor on the passenger front side gets really hot while im driving to such a point that people cant put their bare feet on the floor or place stuff on the floor that can melt. Any suggestions to what the cause of this might be and how to reduce or eliminate this?

This was my dads old car before I got it about a year ago. I'll have to check about the heat shields. I've read on another topic that people say the cat might be the problem?

Ek ry ook 'n 3.8 (2004) en het ook dieselfde ondervinding. Die vloer word warm maar nie tot jou vlak nie. Al die skermplate op my Pajero is in plek.So, as jy hoor van 'n oplossing/verbetering, lig my asb ook in.

So it sounds like most guys are blaming the catalytic converter for the overheating.

Well then the easy solution is to remove the cat box and knock the inside honeycomb out and put the box back.Might take you an hour or so.
Yeah thats the plan, any adjustment needed to the engine after that?

So here's one guys main reason for the overheating: The cat is located underneath the passenger front floor and reaches a temperature of about 600°C during your drive. Most people only start noticing this heat when you drive either slow or when you "stop and go" a lot. The reason for this is that the cats heat doesnt get a chance to cool off by means of air circulation from driving, but im going to disagree a bit on this. My girlfriend was the one who noticed this heat and informed me during our trip to Mozambique in January while still on our way there. It got a lot worse once we hit the dunes where we stopped often. So yes it gets worse when stopping a lot during the trip, but this heat is during high speed driving as well (110km/h). So either the cat is blocked and causing excessive heat under the car or the heat shields are of bad quality. I will report back next week after removing the cat.

So today I replaced the silencer box under the front passenger seat with a normal pipe to try and remove the heat build up. Engine noise has not really increased after the modification. I will report back on the floor heat in a weeks time

Time to report back. Yesterday I did a 300km trip in the hectic wheather including some strong winds. No floor heat build up and some impressive fuel consumption figures: My trip was from Witbank on N4 to Krugersdorp on N14 all the way to Potchefstroom. The trip was mostly in head wind and avg speed of 105km/h. Avg fuel consumption is 13.7L/100km. The car is a little bit louder and compression is less in the system resulting in revs falling slower. Response feels slightly better but not really noticeably.
