I feel that the reach of the standard full beam headlights is not too spectacular and i have been looking at the 80w LED spotlights from 4x4 direct which are selling at R4150 a pair + transport to Dbn and does not include wiring or relay. This is for a 2010 3.2 SWB (with a much improved dash fix - thanks again guys)
Their info on these units is a little sparse to say the least, and when I requested a data sheet they referred me back to their website. I have since learned from them that, in addition to their advertised facts that each light has 8 x 10w CREE LED's and that it will illuminate an object at 400 meteres, the housing is aluminium and the units are watertight and suitable for 4x4'ing.
No info available on the actual size of each unit or its output (lumens) at specified distances so I am a bit wary of ordering sight unseen.
Had anyone had any experience of these spots or heard anything from someone who has tried them? Any help will be appreciated.

I was at their Boksburg shop the otherday. They were busy fitting LED headlights in a rally car. Using the car as a test subject for a new product.

So i ASSUME all of their products are tested to such a high benchmark.

I found their service and knowledge very good and would trust them.

But yes I have been looking at LED bars myself. I find it very difficult to choose as there are so many options available and found higher Watt doesn't mean higher lumens...

Leisure Wheels mag did a light comparison about a year ago - well worth finding as it may answer some of your concerns.

I put on a pair of Cibie Oscar needle beam lights & a pair of Oscar+ driving lights, (both old school halogen light sources) and now have light for much more than the 400m that you refer to.

I opted for a LED bar from 4x4 Direct and were very happy with the result
The reason :
I needed stronger lights for night driving and also did not want to fit a "bulbar" of any sort and the LED bar fitted nicely directly on the front bumper of my 2011 GLX

I also did not opt for a stronger light as the difference between dim and bright is to big

I recently replaced a pair of Hella spotlights with a 20inch Nachtfalk light bar, available at nachtfalk.co.za for about R1,400 not including the wiring harness. The outer 6 leds on each end are flood lights and the inner 30 are spot lights. The quality of the beam is absolutely amazing and it seems you can see forever (slight exaggeration) when compared to my Hella spots.

You will not regret getting LED spots or a light bar.

I did see the survey in Leisure Wheels a while ago but the LED spotlight from 4x4 Direct that was reviewed was a different model from the one that they now stock.
I had not really thought of getting an LED lightbar as I was under the impression (mistakenly?) that a lightbar would give me a more horizontal spread of light and less penetration straight ahead, which is what I am looking for.
Has anyone done a visual comparison between a lightbar and a pair of spots of similar output to compare the characteristics of each?

Hello John - From what I see most Lightbars is that they are combination of flood / spot lights. the middle LEDs are set often as a 30deg spot light with the side LED's set as 60deg flood lights.
so the side LED'S sits within a lens which create flood lights and the middle LED's sits inside a lens which create a spot light.

the latest technology they talk about is 5D LED bars. check out the bad you tube videos from the yanks meaning basically the lens in which the LED sit is both a flood and a spot beam. so all of LED's are creating flood and spot lights.

I just bought a 30" 180W curved light bar for my Colt bakkie the other day - for R1490! Really good quality and obviously very bright.
The outer 24 LED's have "flood" reflectors and the inner 36 are "pencil" type for distance illumination.
I bought a few for that price and also some smaller ones - if anybody is interested.
