Petrol Pajeros
Just bought my 4th Pajero, but first time petrol (3.5l). Vehicle is low mileage, excellent condition and much cheaper than a diesel so I did the calculation and worked out that it should be the same overall cost as a DiD for the next 75 000 kms. The vehicle is only for holidays so I should be ok. My calculation includes a chip and remap from Dastek, who say they can improve consumption by 10-15 %. Has anyone else done a similar calculation? Or have some secret info on petrol Paj's that I may not have included?
Re: Petrol Pajeros
The 3.5 will use 30% more fuel than the DiD. Use that in your calculation.

Hi Roelf

Thanx for the input. I used more than 30 % so it can only get better! :D

I hope so

Re: Petrol Pajeros
You'll be spending 30% more on fuel every week/month. Long after you've forgotten the cash you saved on the purchase, you be paying that additional amount.

I know a guy here who bought a disco V8, "so cheap it's a no brainer". He sold it some months later, "the more frequent refilling is killing me" were his comments. It was his daily runner.

Perhaps if you put aside say 50% of what cash you saved, and used this to offset your fuel biils, you'll feel ok.

Re: Petrol Pajeros
My previous Pajero was a 3.2DiD, got around 11km/l. My latest Pajero is a 3.8 V6, roughly 5-5.5km/l. I justify this by the purchase price. It doesn't make refilling any less painful, but I keep reminding myself what I paid for it...
Re: Petrol Pajeros
I have the 3.5 V6. Get 6.2kM/l average for city driving / daily commute. Yes, it is heavy, but I also do no loose any sleep about when my R70000 diesel pump will go and destroy the rest of the engine to round off the repair to a R100k. Second hand Diesels are ticking time bombs. Pajero's diesel motors are good (the better ones around), but unfortunately their owners are the guys that fill up the forum's engine space with issues. Almost no issue on the 3.5 motor. Just the lifters that become noisy with time and you need to replace the crank bolt with the new type. I also had the outlet manifolds crack, but that was a cheap R3.5k fix.

My 3.8v6's consumption never scared me, but towing the Echo Chobe brought tears to my eyes.Image

Roelf - was that purely tar / open road driving. no heavy sand or crawling or 4x4 driving...?

If so I would understand the tears!
