Alternator Advice
Hi all,

We have a 2002, 3.2 DiD GLS SWB (4m41) with a faulty alternator. It's not charging the battery and Mitsubishi confirmed this. But a replacement from them without installation is R24,000. Last time i checked and a recon alternator was going to cost about R8000. My partner then had her auto electrician put one in for around 5000. I'm not sure if he had the original one reconditioned or swapped it out for a reconditioned one. We're trying to find our invoice. Either way, it's still not working.

Can the wonderful minds of this forum please advise on what is a good route to take to sort this out.

I'm in the Northcliff area. Would you opt for a new OEM part, try find one from a stripped car, have the current one reconditioned, or what?

All our dash lights come on, we can't change console settings... Does that indicate something else is a foot?

TIA
Re: Alternator Advice
Get hold of a good auto electrician, to identify the problem.
The Pajero's alternator can be rebuilt by most competent auto electricians.

Re: Alternator Advice
I had mine (2003 DiD, 320 000km) replaced with a cheap and cheerful version, the total cost was under R2000, about 18 months ago. That was purely because of cost- the parts to repair the original would have cost more. Still going fine, including a long Namibia/Botswana/Zimbabwe trip with plenty of dust and vibration. So it sounds as if you should start by going back to the auto electrician who did the recon/swap. From my limited experience, it seemed that when the dash lights up like a Christmas tree (and the "A/T Temp" light stays on), the battery is discharged and the alternator is not re- charging it.
