My cruise control does not work at all, and the symptoms are a bit strange.
When underway, if I try to turn on cruise control, the status light remains off and the controls have no effect.
However with the vehicle is stationary, engine running, pressing the cruise control button turns the status light on. So the light works, but when underway setting, accelerating, etc., still do not work even though the light stays on.
Any ideas?

ps I now realise how dependent I have become on cruise control for long distance driving and how bad I am at maintaining a set speed

Replace your Speed Sensors on the diesel pump.
My Pajero started with the same symptoms about 6 years ago. First the speed control, then cutting out and engine dies when I went uphill+downhill on high ways. Spend thousands of Rands with agents, no luck. Eventually it became life threatening scenario driving on high ways between traffic. December 2014 during my trip to Pretoria the vehicle died 18 times on the road between Heidelberg and Pretoria. Messed around with electrical connections looking for bad connections, etc... story goes on.
Then I found "morse code fault signal" description on the web, done the test, connect no1 to earth, specific dashboard lights flickers and give you a count, mine was 18, speed sensors, replaced it, fixed.
Now more that 2 years later, no problems with speed control engine dying on me and my Pajero hums on the road.

Thank you for this. I will have it checked. I actually had my diesel pressure pump rebuilt a couple of years ago – it may even be a faulty connection as a result of the refitting.

I switch the cruise control off, engine light stays on till i switch engine off. When i restart, all back to normal. Do you think it could be caused by the same issue as yours?

Your problem is not speed control related. The speed control automatically disengages as a safety measure whenever the ECU registers ANY fault.

You need to look at the registered fault code to try and point you in the right direction. The instructions to read the fault code is somewhere here on the forum.
