Hi,
Have a question regarding the cooling on my gen 3 SWB 3.2 DI-D 2001. When I start in the morning temperature comes up to normal. if i stop and restart again the temperature climbs to the red and then slowly comes down to normal again. I have flushed the system and heater this problem is still there.
Can anyone help me with what will cause this climb to red and then back to normal again.
Regards
Derek
This sounds like the dreaded "cluster problem" Gen 3's are known for. ie the problem could be your temp gauge in the cluster and not the engine itself. Google Pajero Gen3 heat gauge problem. What I found on mine was by banging on the top of the dash above the cluster would immediately bring the gauge down sometimes. Evidently the cluster problem is a resister that suffers a dry joint. I tried repeatedly but could never find a dry joint anywhere. I fitted an aftermarket gauge permanently.
I would borrow an after market gauge or get one from midas etc and rig it temporarily. Sounds like a lot of work but you don't want to go and overheat that motor. When it happens again checking the aftermarket gauge will show if its the cluster or not. I plumbed my gauge sender unit into the welsh plug in the housing where the normal sender unit is/
Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you so much for the help I really appreciate, was the gauge, re soldered now gauge reads at a quarter and doesn't move at restartpeterpot wrote:This sounds like the dreaded "cluster problem" Gen 3's are known for. ie the problem could be your temp gauge in the cluster and not the engine itself. Mine also started to do it a few months ago. fitted another gauge behind the steering with the probe contact close to the original gauge so they measuring at similar spots.
What I like about the other gauge how accurate it is and you can quickly see within seconds if the temp climbs i.e. up a hill or when it labors where the other gauge would not move.

I have a similar problem, but after replacing the thermostat and then the heat sensor it stays flat at the bottom. Will try your advise.
On my Gen 1 my temp rises to quater. It stays there most of the time which is normal however when I'm in a serious traffic jam the temp rises to just over half. When I get into moving traffic again the temp comes back to normal. Also my interior heater does not work at all. I suspect the thermostat may have been removed but I have not checked yet?

Talking cooling systems, it is advised to check the fan clutch periodically as the kms get higher. They do eventually slowly give up the ghost. If turned by hand with stationary engine, the fan should offer some resistance. Difficult to explain exactly how much but worn ones turn quite freely. Try a new vehicle and get used to the "feel."
There is away to refill the oil in the clutch with the special oil but it must be checked regularly to ensure it continues to operate correctly, alternatively new "pirate" units are available from a company in CT or the dealers.
