Hi Simon,
How does one differentiate road noise from tyre noise and bearing failure without borrowing someone else's tyres? I have serious road noise when driving my Pajero 3.2DID SWB on smooth tar as well as smooth hard pack dirt roads at speeds between 80 and 110 kms / hour. There is probably about 20,000 kms wear left on tyres. I took the vehicle to the Mitshibishi workshop in Nelspruit and they felt it was only Tyre noise. I am aware that a good sound system is another solution!!!
By the way what generation is this vehicle?
Thanks

Tyre roar is present whether going in a straight line or cornering (although the sound might change when cornering, especially with aggressive tyres). Wheel bearing noise is normally greatly amplified when placing the bearing under lateral load, such as when steering from side to side or cornering.
What tyres to you run?
Is the noise different when there is load on the drivetrain than when the vehicle is free-wheeling (in gear)?
Your 2005 DiD is a Generation 3 Pajero.

Thank you Gerrit for your input!
Tyres are Dunlop Grandtrek ATs 265x65x17's ( Not really my cup of tea) I will change to BF ATs when these are worn out. I have not noticed any change in noise level when cornering but will try your ideas out and advise. I have a few more questions on the vehicle but will post them under correct subject line.
By the way I have been really impressed with the vehicle's performance off road. Needs a little more ground clearance though!
Thanks again

Hi Simon & Other Forum Readers.
I have just replaced the Dunlop Grandtrek AT's with BFG All Terrains and have at least 70% noise reduction. The BFG's were rather expensive at R9800 per set whilst the new Goodyear Wrangler 3 ply wall AT 's were about R9250. Considering BF's reputation and increase kilometres I went the BFG route. It is really great without that persistant road noise. I will now be able to turn the music volume down!!!
