One year with the Gen 4
OK, It’s now been one year and 30 000km with the Gen 4 since I said goodbye to the Gen 3.

After owning the Gen 3 for 10 years and close to 270K km, I was quite sceptical to change to the Gen 4, which I still think is a lesser car than its predecessor!

I must however admit that it has grown on me and I am very much looking forward to our upcoming Namibia trip this December. :D

Just some of my observations:

- The 140Kw is an awesome machine which makes for even better towing performance than the Gen 3 – especially uphill!

- It’s HEAVY on fuel. Can’t get the figures I got with the Gen 3 in town and towing. However with open road solo cruising it will go up to 10km/ltr, which I never saw with the Gen 3!

- It’s a rattle box – point. No comparison to the built quality of the Gen 3.

- Still need to resolve the indicators/wiper stalks switching ON at the slightest corrugations!

On the up side – reliable as expected. No issues to date! It has now been retired to Holiday service mainly – will probably still be with us for a looooong time! ;)

We've been fortunate to have had a few good trips with it during the year. Herewith some proof!

Re: One year with the Gen 4
That is the thing with the Pajero. It is more than a car, it becomes part of the family.

I agree with you on your findings on the gen4 against the gen3. My experiences are the same.

In the end not GREAT cars, but still SPIRITED, and reliable, cars for SPIRITED People!

Love the photos by the way.

Re: One year with the Gen 4
Hey Lowrange that rig looks exactly the same as mine! Except the roof rack and the snorkel. But really can't compare as my step up was from a Pajero Sport and that to me was a huge step.
Enjoy and may we cross paths one day!

Hi Lowrange -

I agree 100% with your views.

Random question - I see your GLX steering wheel came with integrated radio controls - was that a retrofit?

Cheers, Dave

Dave, I bought mine with the steering controls. Apparently you can buy them, remove the dummy covers on your steering wheel, and click them in. The dealer then has to do some magic and voila!

Maybe have a chat with the dealers. Not sure what it would cost.

Hi LowRange.

I am exactly in the position you were a year ago, just got my Gen4 about a month ago. Hope that I will enjoy it as much as you, judging by your pics!

Re: One year with the Gen 4
Hi LowRange

I got my GEN4 SWB years ago (Also after Gen3) just over 2 years ago and I agree with your comments.

I average 10.20 kms/L compared to 11.52 kms/L with the Gen3.

I have done 4 Kgalagadi trips since getting it and the Gne4 cruises the dunes and corrugated roads, but the 2 things that irritate me the most are:-
  • The steering levers (windscreen wipers especially, activating on the corrugations, and
  • The Rattles....
Mitsubishi installed a dash bracket that they said would help and it did to a degree, but still the 2 issues.

I remember reading on this forum about a crew from Alberton (I think it was), who came down to Cape Town and did Dash Rattle Bracket installations which solved the rattling problem. I wonder if they still pop down to Cape Town occassionally to do such installations. I would live to get on their Job List.

Your photos look great!
