In 2016 we bought my wife a 2008 SWB Pajero with 190k on the clock. To date, her car has taken us to many of our favorite holiday destinations.
Since we got the car there was a knocking sound that came from the rear the moment you engage reverse, and a similar sound when you were traveling at lower speeds and you released the accelerator and when you would then press it down again. This, over the last few months, became worse. I did a lot of research on the internet but couldn’t really find anything specific.
I decided to take the car to Profection Propshaft in Boksburg. There Dion the owner of the business lifted the car on the ramp, checked a few things and told me that the problem lies with the rear drive shaft and that he will have to open it to inspect.
I decided to leave the car there and hoped for the best. I then got a call from him later in the morning saying that it is indeed the rear prop shaft and they will have to recondition the CV’s on both ends. I told them that they should proceed with the proposed work.
Later the day I got a call and they told me it was all done. To be honest I didn’t expect it would have been fixed. When I got there Dion explained to me what he did. He had to coat both ends (splines) of the shaft where it goes into the CV with polyprop and replaced the boots.
When I got into the car I was expecting for the sound to still be there, but it wasn’t. I drove the car for a few Km’s and there was nothing…. I was as happy as a pig in mud.
So, the reason for the post is in two-fold.
1. There are still some very good workshops out there with guys that know what they are doing.
2. If you drive a Pajero SWB and have a knocking sound when engaging reverse or when you press down on the accelerator or take your foot off it while moving it might be your rear drive shaft that needs to be reconditioned. Which will cost you much less then if you don’t and end up having to replace it.
I’m hoping that this post will help someone who is having the same problem than what I had.
