Hello, my sister is driving a Pajero MK4 3.2 DI-D 4M41. When the car starts it idles well for about 15 minutes then the engine temperature shoots up insanely after that the engine dies and it would take 30 mins to an hour for the car to be able to start again. Please help, what could be the problem
It may sound silly but check your coolant level BY REMOVINGTHE RADIATOR CAP !!.
I had a thing with engine heating up very quickly while in Kruger. This happened while driving slowly and afdter a burst of speed (airflow through the radiator the situation became mor maneable,
I just checked the liquid level in the OVERFLOW CONTAINER and the level was where it should be.
After nursing back to Johannesburg and frequent stopping it was established the next day that the coolant did not expand from the radiator into the overflow container and back into the radiator again when cooler.
There was about 33 % coolant missing in the radiator which schould have manifested itself by an empty or below minimum coolant level in the overflow bottle....but did not
So, never assume anything !!!

Yes I've had the same looking at the expansion tank. Was lined with rusty deposits, tried to clean without any success. I then came across drain cleaner placed small amount water inside, got cloth added cleaner covered with cloth. Shuck radiator the excessive chemical reaction removed the scale. I've now got a very clean expansion tank. I can easily see level. Note the chemical reaction can be violent very dangerous and corrosive. Observe safety precautions. But I'm happy can see inside expansion tank no more thinking its level is ok. Hope my tip helps.
