New Tyres for Gen 2
Hi All

I have a '97 3.0 SWB and need new tyres. I've been considering replacing the standard 235 75 r15's with 31 10.5 15's to give me a bit more ground clearance. I would like to find out if the tyres will fit without rubbing or will I need to get a lift kit? At this stage my suspension is standard although I would eventually like to upgrade it.

Also, I have been considering BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tyres or Khumo Road Venture KL78's mainly because both are quite reasonably priced (R1400 each). Can anyone offer me advice regarding my choice? Most of my travelling is on tar but as I only use my Pajero for leisure travel I'm a bit concerned that the tyre choice may be too highway oriented.

The size is not a problem.

You wont find BFG All-Terrain at that price, and I am inclined to think that if you're wanting a little extra clearance, the extra offroad performance of A/T's is probably more suited to what you want.

I'd suggest you hunt around for good deals on various 31x10.5/R15 or 265/75R15 AT tyres. including Khumo KL71, Hankook RF10, GY Wranglers, Maxxis Bravo, Pirelli Scorpions etc. The BFG A/T tyres are starting to get very expensive for their worth IMO.

Good luck

I have 31X10.5X15 Dueler's and they fit perfectly.

In fact, I believe my speedo is more accurate now!

Hi Simon and Anton

Thanks for the good advice. I'm relieved that they will fit without modifications. I'm going to get some quotes on the tyres you suggested - hopefully I will find a good deal. I will let you know what I find. As a matter of interst, what tyres are you currently using?

I had 31" BFG A/T's and while a decent tyre they have their shortcomings (if you search the tyre forum I have covered this before), and considering their cost at the time +-R1800 they were too costly. I wanted Maxxis Bravo but their service sucked, so then settled for GY Wranglers but at the time there was a 2 month waiting period for stock. Eventually settled on Hankook RF10 which cost me R1200 a pop. I haven't done enough mileage to get a true picture but so far so good.

Good one Anton

You have posted the pics now how about telling us how these tyres perform. My Bfs are on their short finals and I am considering going the bridgestone at route, I have heard that they perform better on wet roads and run quieter than bf but that was the guy that wants to sell them to me (he can get bf but not at the price of the bridgestones). At 1400 a piece it is better than the bfs but I don't need drama out in the bundu

I got this car in July with these tyres on, and only tested them off-road once in mud (the only car to get up a "snotty" uphill). Granted, the others had the wrong tyres for the job - HT's. These are AT's, and you can expect some road noise, but it is certainly much quiter than the "Conticracks" I used on my previous Pajero.

I used Conti World 4X4's after the "Conticracks", and they were dead quiet - great on the road, but then again HT's - this would have some limitations in muddy terrain.

My boet (a Landy V8 freak) uses only BFG and Cooper tyres. He claims they are the best. But apparently expensive.

I THINK the BFG's have better walls - therefore better in spiky/rocky terrain.

As Naas would say, "Op die einde van die dag" it is all about purpose. If you intend doing overlanding, the Duelers are perfect. If you are into the hardcore stuff, it would be advisable to have hardcore tyres - otherwise you may need to replace your recovery straps too often (let alone making your Pajero look silly to those other brands)!
