Tyres for 2008 GLX
Hi - i know that this topic has been killed here but I actually could not quite find my answer in any one of the other posts.

I need to replace the tyres on my 2008 GLX LWB. It is driven by my wife as her day to day run around - drop kids off, go to shops etc. However, it also serves as our towing vehicle to tow our Xplorer. The car spends the majority of it's life on tar (unfortunately) but we do the odd "overland" trip - eg. next year is Kgalagadi and Etosha / maybe Bots.

At the moment it still has the standard Dueller H/T's on - i want to replace them with A/T's but I am torn between the Dueller 694 (i think it is) and the BFG's.

Now I know the BFG is probably the more popular tyre but I am concerned about road noise, maximum speed/rating and safety on wet roads. I have BFG's on my Defender and never had problems with wet roads but that may be because it never really goes quick enough to experience any real wet road problems :D . Also, the same applies for the speed rating - will never be a problem with the defender. As for road noise - landy is always noisier than the tyres could ever be.

So my expeience with BFG's ahve been good and I will certainly use them again on my car. However, as for Wendy's car - taking into account that it is mainly road use, that she transports the kids in the car etc -> would the BFG or the Duellers be the better choice?

4ePajero had BFG's and then fitted Duellers.

Next time round he says he will go with BFG's again.
Re: Tyres for 2008 GLX
I am biased:

I had Bridgestone Duelers and BFG on my vehicle. The Bridgestones are less noisy than the BFG, but they last 1/2 the distance, mind you last time I check they were also less expensive?. Also I had three punctures on the Duelers which I have never had on the BFG, but this might be coincidence which led to my bias :? . I have never experienced issues with wet roads and the BFG's, but maybe I just understand the dinamics of a 2ton vehicle and a wet road?

Just bear in mind that you might need to go up one size when fitting BFG, where the Duelers are probably available in the standard size.

BFG rules!!

No - go up one profile. I think the standard is 265/65/17. Last time I checked BFG was only available in 265/70/17, which means a slightly higher profile. There is some debate on whether this makes a difference on the torque converter lockup on the autos. On my manual it is not an issue. This also mean that your speedo will be slightly different from the current display, which might look like fuel consumption has decreased, but speedo will actualy be more accurate. Off course it will also increase ground clearance ever so slightly which is a plus.

Go to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp and punch in the two sizes and see what the differences are.

Maybe the std size is also available now, but it wasn't last time I checked.

thanks CATS - i will check it out. I will check with the dealer as well as i have heard that fitting non standard size tyres could result in repudiated warranty claims in some instances. Cheers
Re: Tyres for 2008 GLX
Does the Gen 4 GLX also have 17" rims? If it has 16" rims like the Gen 3, then you can get the BFG A/T KO in the original 265/70R16 size (as well as the Bridgestone Dueler 694s).

Hi there

Let me know how it goes and your final decision. I am gonna have to fight with the dealers this week with my tyres. worried might not win. So will need options aswell. Let me know the prices aswell

My story is that the original Yokohama tyres that came with the GLX have only lasted just under 10K km. that is the 2 front tyres. Had alignment checked and it was OK. so will see what dealer says.

Re: Tyres for 2008 GLX
I am still undecided - i went to Hi Q La Lucia and they actually suggested that I look at the Good Year AT/SA's - about R1650 per tyre. I did some research on them and they seem to be very good tyres - so the search goes on, but I think I will settle with the GY's.
