Have you had the steering components checked for play?

My girlfriends RunX and Merc had this problem... not a 4x4, but I think the principle still applies. On both cars, it was the non-driven wheels that gave the problems.
On the RunX, the car was bought new, and I thought that the tires were rotated at the std service, but they did not. So after around 20 000km, the tire tread had sever "cupping". I actually make an appointment with a Good Year agent, and they said that it is vital on some vehicles to rotate very often, say around 5000km). Also have everything checked, and drove another demo model RunX with the same tires - it had the same problem.
On the Merc, the front tires have the problem (as it is rear wheel drive) - they need to be rotated often!
It just seems like some vehicle / tire combos have this problem. Some people say that it is because the non-driven wheels that only wear when breaking, so the wear is alway in the same direction... not sure if that is true.

Gerrit Loubser wrote:The deformation of tread blocks happens on non-driven wheels as well, but it is more significant on driven wheels. Have the tyres with the heel-and-toe wear always been at the front or might they have been rotated from the rear to the front?
AFAIK the worn tires have always been at the front. My feeling tells me that if such problems will occur, it will most probably be in the front and not the back - seeing that front alignment is more sensitive than the back?
Edit: How can one check to see if the coils are worn/done?

Seems like it could be one of two main problems from what I understand - taken from various sources:
*Heal and toe wear
*Shocks
