I always attributed the trend towards bigger wheels on 4wd vehicles to their increased use on pavement, driven by bigger brake disks and fashion. For highway use bigger brake disks are desirable, but for off road smaller wheels are clearly the way to go. I know some people up here have gone to some lengths to fit 15" wheels to Land Cruisers that came with 16". I'm at least very happy that my Pajero takes 15" wheels.

Hey guys,
Tell me,
What exactly is the difference (performance wise between STs and STTs, as below, Andre mentions fitting Coopers STs, I have STTs, and then bosaap mentions fitting BFG MTs,
Whats the difference between STs and STTs,
I always thought STT stood for (Sand Terrain Tyres) and M/T for Mud terrain.
Could someone clarify?

So if St's are sant terain I guesss I should not hit the sand with MT's. My next trip home I want to try out a dessert trip. would MT's be ok?

The Cooper ST is the All Terrain model, where as the STT is the mud terrain tire. About 2 years back my brother fitted the ST's and I fitted the STT's - the ST's are a very good all rounder, good in the wet on tar and excellent in sand. The STT on the other hand is an awesome tire, very good on wet tar, but you have to be wide awake when driving on sand, as it digs quicker than a TLB - awesome in mud. A nice feature of the STT is the sidewall protection. On the ST's you will easily get 100 000km and probably around 80 000km on the STT, as the compound is a bit softer. Hope it helps.
