Park your Pajero facing north. Go into settings. Set the deviation to 20 degrees. Take a magnet and place it in the centre of the dash, as close as possible to the windscreen. Now move the magnet in a circle, from the windscreen towards the edge of the dash, and back to the windscreen. Circle must be about 20cm in diameter. Compass will be calibrated before the circle has been completed.

But it's all on page 4-45 of the Owners Manual?

With my luck, when I drag a magnet around over the dash, will all the electronics go north as well.

I've also given up on mine.. I just use the GPS. I dont even bother looking at the compass any more....

Oh, and on Wednesday, all I'm doing, is going North All the way to Guma Lagoon Lodge

It worked, sort of...
It does show the correct direction IMO, so I will play around with it a bit....

I don't know what to expect, so I have to assume and work from there. It does not move much irrespective of my driving..

The size of the magnet seems to play a large role. I initially used one from the back of a speaker, and my compass did not even move.
I then re calibrated using a small magnet like those found on name badges, and moved it in a clockwise direction over the center of the dash. It worked, and the general direction seems to be ok, however, not very accurate.

My last two Pajeros have been very poor in the direction department. Good thing I don't plan on doing a night instrument landing on an aircraft carrier

The PAJERO compass is a gimmick.

Use your GPS - it is seriously accurate!

I also use a magnet from a name badge. It works well. Make sure that the deviation is set to +2 . Make sure that your cellphone is not near the compass when you are doing the calibration. That effects the accuracy. Sometimes you have to do the calibration 2 or 3 times before it is accurate.

The magnetic declination in South Africa varies between about -24 degrees and -6 degress - depends where you are. If you set the declination wrong then the reading will be inaccurate.

You can always look up the navigational stats for your closest airport or here is a list (remember declination changes over time) LONGITUDE, LATITUDE, AND MAGNETIC DECLINATION
