It doesn't make a sound with the ignition and I can't hear anything with the engine running so I doubt it is a fuel pump. I can't remember or see any electrical connections either so the only thing I can think of is that it might be a charcoal canister of some sorts.

What does a charcoal canister do on a vehicle?
It captures fuel vapors and prevents them from escaping to the atmosphere and then stores the fumes and recycles them to the fuel tank or engine intake for combustion as needed.
The long and short of it is that it helps to protect the environment and improve fuel economy.
