Thanks Roelf, it seems I should maybe not buy this Gen III, but then again, the price is very tempting and so are other factors, too. One owner, FSH, low mileage and it seems the general condition is great. Has done only one 4x4 trail and a short gravel road trip to somebody's farm a few times. Apart from that only tar.

In that case, I support your Gen3 preference.

My response was purely based on the "generation" and not car specific.
You should also consider running the Gen3 on 500ppm and keeping to the 7.5k km service interval.

I had a 2006 DiD LWB GLS and thought it was a wonderful car to own and drive. Mine had 10k on (6 months old) when I bought it. Later sold it locally in my little dorp and I still see the car and bump into the owner on a regular basis. It has a tough life with a resort being built far up in Mozambique. It still looks like new and has not given any trouble in the 300k odd km on the clock now.

When he saw my red fire engine the first time he put in an offer to buy it off me when I'm done with it..... until he saw the 3.8V6 badge .... Sissy!

I just missed a GEN IV in Stellenbosch - 2007 - with almost identical mileage, same colour, etc. for R175k. But it was sold the day after the ad has been placed. D**n
Just had a quick look-see on the internet now, but nothing like that at all.

The previous gen Prado is also a great buy. But as far as I know they typically also come with TC and centre diff lock. (Not sure if you could get rear diff lock as factory fitted extra).

Previous shape diesel prado is underpowered IMHO , so no brainer for the paj there. The petrol is a monster, but similar with the paj in that sense including the consumption.

What you do get extra on the Prado is quite a hefty brand premium you need to pay for a vehicle which is very similar I.t.o drive and quality/reliability. This made it an obvious choice for he paj in my mind.

It so happened that when I phoned the seller last night, hthe car was as good as sold to another party. So the quest continuous...for a Gen IV. But not right now; in a few months nearer the end of the year. Budget allows for <R200k.

My business partner is at the point of selling his 2007, might be 2008, model 3.2 GLS LWB GenIV. Black in colour. Think he wants around R220000 and I think it has around 170000km on? Full service history. It has a few extras that will go with it, like double battery, roofrack, long range tank, uprated suspension. It has been used as daily drive but also did a few heavy trips to Namibia, Zim and Bots so has some battle scars to show. He bought a later 2013 model to replace it with.

Will get more details from him and let you know when he is ready to sell. Might be worth a look.

(Mildly off topic), but I wonder how many guys out there buy a second Pajero, after having owned one? I think it is a pretty high percentage and a testimony to the real value of a Pajero.

I am on count 5 now with currently 2 in the yard, a 2001 3.2 lwb (bought new) and a 2009 3.2 swb (2nd hand). Love them! Drive a Toyota as well, not the same.
