Hi Roelf
Agreed 100% - but to tell the customer that they will only look at it if it exceeds 10 ltrs between services is not what an owner wants to hear after a pretty expensive purchase .
Chris, I'm not arguing that all is well - I'm just saying that it is a little unfair to single out Mitsu. My very first Pajero, a 1994 3.0 V6 required a pint of oil at about every third fill-up. It never varied and I just lived with it.
DID, you do not mention what distance you have covered in the two years. For a 3.2 Pajero under 100k km, some might rate that as high. But to an OEM unfoirtunately no. Engines just do use oil, some more than identical others. The chances of them addressing that as a problem are very low. It might get better with time or as Roelf said, you just might have to live with it. Personally as long as I do not have to add oil between services I would be happy.
I had an extensive amount of experience with oil consumption, oil companies and OEM,s. Oil consumption is a very emotional matter with vehicle owners and OEM's unfortunately avoid it like the plague. This is mainly because there are so many, many different factors which effect oil consumption.
If the OEM were to try and resolve this it would mean dismantling the engine, honing the cylinders and fitting new rings maybe new pistons, valve guide seals and gaskets. In some cases once reassembled, complex engines are just never the same again. There are just so many sensors and systems that have to work together in perfect harmony. IE - you might end up in a worse situation than you are now.
Using a reputable brand, full synthetic diesel engine oil will improve the consumption slightly but do not expect it to resolve it completely. They are expensive and if you do, look for an SAE..../40.
These are amazing vehicles and we hope you can resolve your concerns.

Hi DID
I'm on my 5th Pajero, and extremely happy with everyone. I also have had a couple of platkarre at the same time, but always grab the Pajero keys first. My current one is on 240 000km and uses no oil between services. Yes, the forum does talk about the problems of ownership more than the joys, BUT I believe everyone on the forum will buy a new Pajero if they can. (Except an unnamed fan in PE that went over to VW! He is still on the forum though
)
So get a good model and enjoy.
PS There is an argument that the price difference between the Diesel and Petrol models more than makes up for the difference in consumption. Work it out for yourself.

If you can feel the grass between your toe's, your flying too low!

I would like to confirm the reliability of these vehicles. I am driving my third Pajero SWB, first a standard 3L V6, second 3L V6, 24 valves & now 3,8 L V6. Must have done about 300 000 km among the three so far over all sorts of roads & tracks & in any weather condition. Apart from normal services, the only abnormal repairs I had done, were cracked exhaust manifolds on my first Pajero & this third one. When the first occurred, Mitsubishi Cape Town told me it was a weak spot of Pajeros. So much for that! The other major consideration is obviously the high cost of genuine ex Japan spare parts & therefore of services by Mitsubishi. There are however other service centers that do an equally good service for less than the agents. Here in Cape Town I can recommend Steve's Auto Clinic in Milnerton. I have taken my Pajeros to them for a number of years & so far have had no complaints.
