Hi Dave,
You are of course right, but even my petrol engined Gen4 (with 15k scheduled interval) was serviced it on 7.5k with Delo 400. I honestly doubt if mineral oil maintains its viscosity and optimal lubricating and cleaning properties for much longer than that.
That said, I'm sure if the OP sticks to only 50ppm diesel, then 10k will be OK. But still, I wouldn't do it with good ol' GTX 15W40.
Just my opinion.
Cheers
Roelf.

Not that I am aware. My car has done about 240 000km now. Is this a specialized job to perform, or something I can do with guidance?peterpot wrote:Has the top timing chain guide been checked or changed. You need to remove the tappet cover. It is only a R200 part but is well known for damaging a Gen3 3.2 engine if left to disintergrate.
If it does need to be changed, what would be involved?

Thanks for all the help on this topic guys. I managed to service my car, changed oil (will try and find delo for next service), changed oil and fuel filter as well the air filter. Car sounds a lot smoother.
I did a hot oil changed, just over 9l and filled up till the dip stick showed correct levels. The old oil was black, normal or not? I used to service every 10k, but will definitely do oil and oil filter change every 7.5k in future.
I enjoyed this exercise and am looking forward to servicing her again

Great. It is actually such an easy job. It takes longer to change and clean-up, than the actual service.
A most worthwhile activity during service is to take a good light to the engine bay and underside of your Pajero. Check the wires, plugs, clamps, pipes, hoses and generally look for trouble.
My 3.8 MIVEC engine took exactly 5L. What a pleasure - drain dirty oil, dump the new 5L container's contents all into the engine and then dump all the oil in the pan back into the container for later disposal.
PS. Black oil coming from a diesel engine is pretty standard. However, I found that full synthetic 5W30 and only 50ppm (and a few 10ppm) diesel fill-ups result in relatively clean oil after 15k km.

What is your opinion on full synthetic 5w30 on gen 4 3.2?RoelfleRoux wrote:Great. It is actually such an easy job. It takes longer to change and clean-up, than the actual service.

If one looks at owners manual, it makes sense to use it.
Then what brand?
Look forward to hear some comments.
If I recall correctly from my Pajero owner's manual, then full synthetic was for DiDs fitted with DPF. So it will work, but in hot SA I'd stick with best quality 15W40 and change regularly.

A very good mineral 15W40 oil is half the price of a good 5W30 full synthetic oil. So changing mineral oil more regularly doesn't have to be more expensive than pushing long distances on synthetic oil.
I have stopped doing the mid-point oil change since acquiring my first synthetic oil lubricated car. I did it once on my 2015 Isuzu 300, but that was because of one 500ppm tank of diesel. The oil was R100/L x 8 plus R300+ for a filter, not small change in my book
