brian pse send us the tel of this mechanic in dar i am in dire straits rgds alsaidBrian wrote:Well, I finally got my Pajero back last 5 days ago and while I am grateful I still don't know what happened. I finally met a mechanic here in Dar that works miracles. Thru a friend who had a similar problem (and whose car is working now for two years without a problem), I called him and explained what had been happening. After I finished he said he could take care of it and that I'd have my car back in 24 hours, and not to consider paying him until I was satisfied. I gave him bus fare to Arusha.
Sure enough, he called me after 8 hours in the engine well, and my Pajero was fixed - guaranteed, he said. Furthermore, he said it wasn't my fuel pump, and he took the new one off and replaced the original so I could sell the new one. He said that the issue wasn't the fuel pump or injectors, but fuel starvation in another part of the system that mechanics don't check and don't know how to fix because they are too focused on what the computer tells them, not what listening to and feeling the engine tells them. Essentially, everyone looks at the pump, injectors and whatever else, but not the places he looks, which is why there are so many abandoned Pajeros in garages here. He says he worked for Mits here for many years so he maybe has specific training as well.
He's not really keen on explaining the entire problem to me, or anyone. He left my other mechanic at Bosch in the dark, but that mechanic is impressed and completely stumped. He clearly knows what goes on in these GDI engines and sees it as a way of life and a way of making a living. He left Dar the other day to go to Nairobi to fix two other Pajeros with similar problems, and I referred him to a shop in Arusha where there are several dead Pajeros (all fuel system problems) so he'll spend some time there making some cash and helping out some folks whose cars haven't worked in months.
My Pajero had spent 3 full months in Arusha unable to move.
My guy is available for travel and I'm happy to recommend him!

hi did u get an answer from brian ref the fundi if u have the fundi tel no pse send to me at balsaid@yahoo.com
What a relief to read your story - as that is exactly what happened to me - and you know a fundi that is able to help me. I am in Tarangire national park and travelling back from Dar with my vehicle I had the misfortune of putting in fuel that was not clean - first 400km no problem last 400km took nearly 20 hours. Please could you supply me with details of your fundi so that I am able to contact him.
Regards
thanks brian called the fundi he fixes all the 3 pajeros gdi i have main problem was the fuel pump in the engine and the fuel filter in the petrol tank,he replaced the fuel filters and the fuel pump in the engine now they run great thank u rgds alsaid
Great! Now the challenge is to use ONLY TOTAL or BP fuel!!! Everything else can harm your engine here.
My check engine light went on again last week and my mechanic says it is the low pressure pump in the fuel tank

Brian - greetings from Morogoro, TZ.
Sounds like I have a very similar problem as yours (and balsaid) with my 3.5 GDI 6g74. Can you please send me the name/number and any details of your fundi in Dar?
I've worked my way through 3 different fundis already, all of whom have succeeded in creating more problems than the last.
Many thanks,
Keith

If anyone knows this mechanic in Tanzania that has been mentioned above, who knows the GDI Pajero, please send me the contact details. I'm in TZ and still struggling with mine. A bit more to my story.....
I've got a 1999 6g74 in a SWB. Like the original post, I had to stumble home in limp mode about 5 months ago (thinking back, I may have had a bad batch of petrol). A local mechanic replaced the high-pressure fuel pump after much head-scratching. Knowing what I know now (thanks forum!), it was most likely simply the micro filters. Lesson learned. I got the car back, and it has never been the same since. I can't even remember all the problems these past 5 months - every time I took it back, he'd fix one problem and give me 2 new ones ("Oh, really? It wasn't like that before you brought it to me?" Uh, no). I'm now on to my third mechanic, who seems to have some knowledge, but is still struggling.
Current situation: Idle is high. When cold, it is around 1500 rpm. When warm, about 1000. When shifting into reverse from park, the RPMs drop suddenly, and the engine shudders then dies. While extremely frustrating, the car was driveable - just had to learn how to reverse aggressively to avoid stalling.... I took it back to the mechanic, and he returned the car with a new problem....
Now in addition to stalling when put in reverse, it stalls when shifting into drive (from park). If I do manage to get it driving again, it often stalls shortly thereafter when I slow to a stop. The RPMs drop as the car slows, they do not stabilize, and the engine then shudders and dies. This makes the car virtually un-driveable, especially in stop and go traffic. This stalling problem seems to happen when the engine is warm, but it's tough to say.
It's hard to get straight answers out of the mechanics here (my swahili stops well before auto repair). In addition to "resetting" everything (sensor positions, presumably, but no clear answer on what exactly) the previous mechanic tinkered with (he was adjusting the set screw on the throttle cable to adjust the idle setting), the current mechanic replaced the plugs and EGR valveS (said there were 2 - really?!). They are always vague about what error codes they get, if any, and what exactly they have tested. My guess is something with the TPS and/or idle control valve and/or ECU itself.
Would greatly appreciate any help, especially if someone knows this mysterious GDI mechanic in Tanzania!
