Cats is right. If the Gen 3 Paj is an SA spec GLS, then the std tire size is 265/70R16 if the original rims were 16" and 265/65R17 if it came with 17" rims. The change to 17" happened in 2004 if I remember correctly.

The SA spec Gen 3 GLX came with 16" steel rims and 235/80R16 tyres.

I don't think the slightly oversize 265/70R17 tyres will lead to any mechanical issues with the driveline; you might find that they have a detrimental effect on the fuel economy, though.

Hi all

I read though this very informative post and at the moment I'm worried. I bought a second hand 2005 Pajero 3.2 Did GLS Extreme Auto and currently the tyres fitted are Hercules A/T 245/70R17 M+S but the sticker on the store state 265/65R17 112H. The tyres look brand new. What will the impact be with the cuurent tyres? Should I look at replacing them with other 17" or can I fit 16" tyres on the current rims?

Jaco, you can't fit 16" tyres on your 17" rims.

The nominal diameter of the original 265/65R17 tyres are 30.56", while the current 245/70R17 tyres have a nominal diameter of 30.5", which is practically identical.

The only difference is essentially that the 245s are a little narrower than the 265s. Just check that the load and speed ratings are in line with your requirements.

Hi All

122 days after I posted my first question on this stream I'm happy to report I have fitted the 265/75R16 BFGoodridge A/T tyres.

We went on holiday to Marina Beach and I took a day trip into the old Transkei and I am very happy with the performance of the tyres!

I had the the 285/75R16 and if compared I have noticed the following:

1. Fuel cunsumption slightly better (plus minus 4%)
2. The tyre and rim temperature has decrease a lot.

In conclusion, I am very happy with the 265/75R16 BFG's!
