CATS,
You should be able to lock it temporarily without too many problems.
It will mean that the blades are running faster than they normally would - because there is always some slip under normal operation - but for a 50km test (not too high revs - say less than 3000 / 3500rpm I reckon you should be OK. Just check the state of your blades first - they start to develop stress cracks and you don't want to put some blades through the radiator.
I also have a viscous coupling in the cupboard that I refilled with silicone oil, so you can have that if you frig yours and then it freks.

Thanks Lowrange - I might just take you up on that offer. Will you have look and see if you still have it?
Thanks Andrew - I will give it a bit of a look see . Is there maybe a place where a bolt can go through to lock the pieces together? Will probably be as noisy as hell running full taps all the time but would be an interesting experiment.
By the way I have a relatively brand new radiator in my garage if someone needs one.

Aaaargh, don't you just hate it when this happens?
Just when you need something you search for it and then realise you threw it out with the last garage cleanup.
So I think there are a couple of ways to lock up the viscous clutch on the fan:
1. A bit of wire woven in and out of the base of the fan blades and then back around the cross mechanism that bolts on to the fan pulley. Temporary!
2. Open the viscous clutch, completely overfill it with suitable silicone oil and then close up. Temporary!
3. Open up the viscous clutch, drain the silicone oil, clean it out with benzene or similar. Fill it with a runny epoxy mixture. Close it up. Run the motor at 2000rpm for 5 minutes to distribute the epoxy. Let it stand for the curing time of the epoxy. Permanent!
Like I said earlier, I wouldn't take this over 3500rpm with the viscous clutch locked. The fan is designed on the basis that there is some slip at the clutch and I have seen older fans with stress cracks at the base of the blades.

Ok. So Lowrange was kind enough to donate me his old viscous unit just before the weekend. Problem is that whoever bolted on the current one on there obviously had ALL his vitamins that morning and had a death wish on nuts and bolts! That thing is so tight I doubt it will come loose without damaging the nut heads. One which I also started to round in my efforts.

I will try and get to AB this week and ask them to do it as they fitted it last time.
Anyway. I also decided ti check for fault codes for some reason. Found a whole bunch of ABS errors (22,32,52 and 15 iIrc) which was strange as I do not have any brake issues, that I know of. More interesting was fault code 16 on the engine(Boost air temperature sensor system) refering to 13c-11???? Where do I get that? Could this be the reason why I get overheating and smokey idle or is this simply the result of the high temps that I get when towing? Help appreciated.

The location and testing for that sensor is shown on 13C-44.
I can't get to my engine at the moment - car on 3 legs up against garage wall!
I have read about this error on Aussie forum - several threads IIRC.

Andrew
Thanks. I know it refers to the manual but my manual that I have downloaded only goes to 13B and then 14, so I need the 13C part? Where do I get that?
