I am desperately keen to do the first service on my new wheels, because it has this brilliant little device. The oil filter sits in a "bucket" with a drainpipe down to the bottom. When you undo the filter all the spillage goes straight down to the oil pan.

I drove my Pajero (not an Isuzu ) from PE to joburg today. Very long and uneventful trip. I have my full length roof rack on and we were towing a fully loaded Venter 6-foot trailer. The wind was mostly from the left side with massive dust storms near Welkom. We also had our dogs with us so both aircons were working overtime (35 degrees outside). I returned 14.0Lt/100km for the trip, quite heavy for a 3.2 but she performed very well considering the load and wind. My average travelling speed was 109km/h according to the Garmin, I set the cruise control at 120 most of the way (GPS speed) so maybe this had something to do with it. From Bloem to JHB I got 13.1Lt/100km so more representative of real life consumption with the conditions mentioned above.

Ha, as a hardcore petrol head I find those numbers encouraging. My old petrol guzzler would have returned about 15% worse figures. Your load and description of conditions seem to match my trip to Paternoster a few years ago. I got about 16 on that one.

Those figures sound fine, even for a diesel. They are normally very feul efficient but if you work them hard they need fuel. I am very happy if my V6 manages 18l/100km towing the offroad caravan. The worst was 28 in the Kgalagadi (broke the tow bar pulling the Xcape through the deep sand, Botswana side). My brother in law's Range Rover diesel used 30 towing an Explorer (100 to 150 kg heavier). The V6 is a great car as long as you dont skimp on the revs and petrol but the Did is nicer to drive (all that low down torque). I'm dreaming of upgrading to a newer Pajero and it will be diesel.

Thanks Roelf and Nic for your replies. I worked out the total trip consumption from Jhb, down to PE in a head wind, a full tank used in PE with some dune driving at Brakkeduine, and the trip home and the overall was 13.58Lt/100km (7.36km/Lt) so really not that bad, all things considered.

PS - Roelf, my right foot is a bit heavier than yours me thinks ;D

Limped home for about 2km yesterday after a terrible screeching noise suddenly developed from the left back wheel!

Turned out to be this little bugger that must have dislodged from the undercarriage somewhere and landed between the brake disc and the cover plate. Must have been sitting there waiting for the right moment to take a dive from Sedgefield, as that was the last gravel load we had traveled in Dec!

Fortunately no damage!
