Having read that timing chain tensioner should be canched after 150000 km.
Question 1. which wears most, chain or adjuster ?
Question 2. should both not be replased together ?
The price of tensioner is R527.49, and the chain is R632.57.
Question 3. which is more importand ?.
Could someone help me as my car have done 161000km now. Tinus Venter Nelspruit.

Interesting one. I always understood that the timing chain guide is the one that needs replacing, so I duly replaced that at 120K service. The new guide was R80. The old one, however showed no signs of damage or wear at all.
I wonder if I should have replaced the tensioner, now, and not the guide.
Someone more intelligent will be able to give you an answer I'm sure.

The timing chain and tensioner don't absolutely have to be replaced at 150000 km. What should be done is that the timing chain, tensioner and guide plates should be inspected regularly as explained in the 4M41 engine manual. Basically the inspection boils down to the following:
Timing Chain:
The tensioner must be pushed against the timing chain manually to take up any slack and the clearance must then be measured between the the two chain spans at the point where they are closest together. The standard value for this clearance distance is 16.5mm and the chain should be replaced when this dimension reduces to 9mm (this effectively means that the chain is stretched). In principal, the timing chain should last a very, very long time. The trick is that it is quite difficult, but not impossible to do this without removing the timing gear cover.
Timing Chain Tensioner:
The tensioner lever should be replaced if it shows any cracks or flakes on the surface that makes contact with the chain or if there is excessive play of the tensioner lever on its pivot shaft.
Guide Plates:
Guide plates should be replaced if they show any cracks or flakes on the surfaces that make contact with the chain. There is a guide plate along the side of the chain, directly opposite the tensioner and there is also a small guide plate at the top of the chain. Have a very good look at this top guide plate. This one is the easiest of all to replace and has been responsible for some heartache on some engines. I believe the design of this top guide has been changed to address this.

That sounds like the little top guide.

Checking the chain, tensioner or guide - is this a big job?
I asked mitsubishi to check this at my last service and they said they couldn't do this without "opening everything up", but they did "listen" to the chain and it sounded fine....
should i get someone to check this? car is on about 120, 000 kms.

dwinter,
I asked Mitsubishi to check the chain, tensioner and change the top guide on my 120K service, and it didn't take much longer than a normal service, so i doubt 'opening everything up' is that much of a challenge. They did, however, charge R800 extra for the privilege.
I have a feeling checking the chain is part of the normal 120K service, but I stand corrected on that.
From reading various forums it seems advisable to get the top guide replaced at around 120K as they have been known to fail.

Eish! R800 sounds a bit harsh for a 20 minute job.
From what I have heard you just remove the boost pipe, egr pipe and the valve cover to get access.
???
